As a devoted fan of K-dramas, I was absolutely thrilled when I heard that “Serendipity’s Embrace” was finally premiering on tvN! The first episode, which aired on July 22, 2024, did not disappoint me in the least. With Kim So-Hyun and Chae Jong-Hyeop as the leads, I knew we were in for a treat.
In the first episode of “Serendipity’s Embrace,” which aired on tvN on July 22, 2024, we meet our new K-drama leads, Kim So-Hyun portraying Lee Hong-Ju, and Chae Jong-Heop as Kang Hu-Yeong. This heartwarming series explores the idea of fate and chance encounters through the lens of a romantic story.
According to a webcomic, the drama follows the tale of Hong-Ju, who harbored feelings for Hu-Yeong during their high school years. However, he spurned her advances, leaving her questioning her judgement regarding love. A decade later, destiny reunites them.
In Episode 1, Hu-Yeong makes his long-awaited return to South Korea for business dealings after a decade-long absence. Upon arriving, he decides to visit a café to arrange a meeting with a young woman. As Hu-Yeong enters the café, an unexpected figure emerges and introduces herself as Hong-Ju. She mistakenly believes Hu-Yeong is her blind date. Meanwhile, Hu-Yeong is left speechless, taken aback by the sight of his past acquaintance. However, just as Hu-Yeong starts to regain his composure, another woman approaches and greets him, causing Hong-Ju to realize her mistake. Remarkably, despite their history, Hong-Ju fails to recognize her first crush, leaving Hu-Yeong feeling uneasy.
What happens in Serendipity’s Embrace Episode 1?

As I watched “Serendipity’s Embrace” episode 1, I couldn’t help but feel a pang of sadness as it became clear that both Hong-Ju and Hu-Yeon’s blind dates hadn’t gone as planned. But just as I was feeling down, Hu-Yeon received an unexpected call from his friend or colleague in the US. He urged Hu-Yeon to meet with those he wanted to see one last time before leaving his hometown forever. Instantly, my mind went back to Hong-Ju.
At the bus stop, he sees her and is instantly transported back in time. A memory surfaces of Hong-Ju, a high school student, waiting for Hu-Yeon with a heartfelt letter in hand. She offers him the envelope filled with her affection, surrounded by cheering classmates. Embarrassed and unsure, he takes it and is asked to read the letter. The scene fades away.
If it appears as if they ran into each other by chance following a ten-year absence, Hu-Yeon comes across Hong-Ju. He eventually emerges from his car and goes towards her, who is purchasing a treat from a street vendor.
Will Kim So-Hyun recognize Chae Jong-Hyeop?

At the street food stall, Hu-Yeong encounters Hong-Ju who initially fails to recognize him. This leaves Hu-Yeong perplexed. He eventually asks if she recalls who he is, and Hong-Ju nonchalantly replies, “Yes, you’re Kang Hu-Yeong.” Irritated, Hu-Yeong queries why she didn’t acknowledge him earlier. Unfazed, Hong-Ju retorts, “Do I have to?” Taken aback, Hu-Yeong mentions it’s been a decade since they last met. Following an argument between the two, Hong-Ju obtains Hu-Yeong’s contact information with the intention of facilitating reconnections with their former high school acquaintances.
Hu-Yeong grows restless at home, anxiously awaiting Hong-Ju’s text. He pouts and expresses his displeasure at the thought of seeing her. However, a flashback takes us back to their high school days, revealing an initial awkward encounter between the two. Yet, in spite of this rocky start, Hu-Yeong was drawn to Hong-Ju and found himself attracted to her.
Is Chae Jong-Hyeop not Kim So-Hyun’s first love?

In the initial flashback at Hu-Yeong’s high school, it appeared as though Hu-Yeong was Hong-Ju’s first romantic interest. However, in episode 1, Hong-Ju confided in her friend Kim Hye-Ji that she had accidentally run into Hu-Yeong at a café. It then came to light that Hu-Yeong had been Hye-Ji’s first love instead. Hong-Ju had facilitated the delivery of Hye-Ji’s love letter to Hu-Yeong as a favor to her childhood friend.
In the here and now, it’s clear that Hong-Ju holds the title of Hu-Yeong’s first love. When Hye-Ji extends an invitation to him for her welcome party, Hu-Yeong responds with irritation, only yearning to hear Hong-Ju’s soothing voice.
Serendipity’s Embrace Episode 1 ending spoilers

In the first episode of “Later, Serendipity’s Embrace” titled “Welcome Dinner,” Hye-Ji plays coyly around Hu-Yeong during his welcome feast. Nevertheless, Hu-Yeong remains steadfast, anticipating Hong-Ju’s arrival. At the same time, Hong-Ju attends a social gathering and comes face to face with her beloved author, Bang Jun-Ho (portrayed by Yun Ji-On). Despite her attempts to elude him, Jun-Ho recognizes her presence and makes his way towards her, hinting at a previous connection between them.
In the closing moments of the evening, Hong-Ju, who has had too much to drink, staggers in late to Hu-Yeong’s welcoming dinner. He remains silent, merely taking in Hu-Yeong’s amusing drunken antics. Afterward, Hu-Yeong escorts her home. Memories of their past at school come flooding back, and they share a hearty laugh. The episode concludes with an emotionally charged scene as Hu-Yeong shares his hidden feelings for Hong-Ju.
