As a long-time fan of K-dramas, I have seen my fair share of romantic stories, but Serendipity’s Embrace has truly captured my heart. In episode 2, the chemistry between Kim So-Hyun and Chae Jong-Hyeop was palpable, making me reminisce about my own past crushes and unrequited feelings.
In episode 2 of “Serendipity’s Embrace,” which aired on July 23, 2024, on tvN, the romantic K-drama continued with Kim So-Hyun and Chae Jong-Hyeop in the leading roles. These two former schoolmates reconnected after a long time apart, with one of them harboring unrequited feelings for the other.
Ten years ago, Kang Hu-Yeong (Jong-Hyop) ran into Lee Hong-Ju (So-Hyun) in a surprising encounter. At first, it appeared that Hu-Yeong was Hong-Ju’s earliest crush during their high school days. However, the truth eventually unfolded to reveal the opposite. Throughout the first episode, Hu-Yeong discovered methods to engage with Hong-Ju once more. Ultimately, he chose to pursue her in this new chapter.
In the second episode of “Serendipity’s Embrace,” Hong-Ju shares with her closest friend, Hye-Ji, the details of an unusual encounter from the previous morning. She admits that she met a man named Jun-Ho, and their interaction became somewhat uncomfortable at one point.
Additionally, Hong-Ju shares her disappointment over Hu-Yeong’s refusal of Hye-Ji’s school proposal. In contrast, Hu-Yeong finds out that his uncle, Baek Wook, is friends with Hong-Ju who resides in the same building. He reaches out to him for assistance in getting to know her better.

In episode 2 of “In Serendipity’s Embrace,” Hong-Ju consents to spend time with Baek Wook’s supposed niece. Unaware, she’s actually scheduled to hang out with Baek Wook’s grown up nephew, Hu-Yeong. The latter looks forward to their meeting the next day.
Upon opening the door, Hong-Ju is taken aback to find herself face to face with Hu-Yeong’s high school classmate instead of the little girl she had anticipated. Despite her initial surprise, she keeps her word and spends the day with him. Their destination is a festival designed for children, which Hong-Ju had originally planned for when she expected to accompany a child. Nevertheless, they have a great time together, experiencing the thrills of rollercoasters and capturing memories through photographs. However, Hong-Ju can’t help but feel a pang of guilt as she keeps receiving calls from her friend Hye-Ji, who has long harbored feelings for Hu-Yeong. Yet, it seems that destiny has other plans.

When Hong-Ju and Hu-Yeong savor their moments together, I can’t help but feel a pang of longing as I watch Jun-Oh (Yun Ji-On) reach out to Hong-Ju on the phone. Protective Hye-Ji does her best to shield Hong-Ju from any contact with him. Yet, deep down, Jun-Oh yearns for a chance to reconnect with his past love. Simultaneously, an unexpected and heart-stopping moment transpires between the lead pair on a stormy evening.
In the car, he relies on her to shut the window and is momentarily stilled when our gazes meet. It appears we were about to share a kiss, but nothing transpired. Once at our separate homes, we’re both flustered, reminiscing on the near-intimate encounter we experienced.
In the subsequent scene, we delve into a memory from the past as the main characters were still in high school. This segment highlighted Hu-Yeong’s infatuation with Hong-Ju and how he harbored hidden feelings for her. Ten years later, those emotions remain unchanged and even intensify when they cross paths once more.

The following morning, Hong-Ju finds herself in a tense workplace atmosphere upon arriving at her animation production office. It soon becomes clear that Jun-Oh, her former partner, has initiated a professional collaboration with her. As a novelist, he will contribute to their upcoming project. However, Hong-Ju is reluctant about this arrangement.
Simultaneously, Hu-Yeong updates his uncle about not being able to travel to the US the day after. He asks for an additional week, suggesting some personal matters with Hong-Ju. In contrast, Hong-Ju encounters Jun-Oh near her workplace. Her expression changes to shock and disappointment when he shares the cause of his departure then. Three years prior, he had departed without a word, but now Jun-Oh explains that he was engrossed in writing his novel.
Hong-Ju makes an effort to keep her composure but reveals her annoyance as she mentions their past split. In response, Jun-Oh insists, “We never ended things between us.” Displeased, Hong-Ju rises from the café and departs. Prior to this, Baek Wook and Hu-Yeong notice her. Baek Wook shares with his nephew about Jun-Oh, prompting Hu-Yeong to trail behind Hong-Ju when she collides with them outside.
At the episode’s close, Jun-Oh disregards the presence of the two individuals and firmly grasps Hong-Ju’s wrist. He asserts that she’s willing to collaborate with him because she still harbors feelings for him. Frustrated, Hong-Ju is saved by Hu-Yeong’s intervention. He tenderly takes her hand and declares, “Lee Hong-Ju, it’s nice to bump into you.” Directly addressing Jun-Oh, Hu-Yeong informs Hong-Ju that she had left her hair tie in his car the previous night. This revelation leaves Jun-Oh stunned, and the duo departs from the scene.
