September 2024: 123 shows on TV and streaming to watch this month

As a seasoned television enthusiast who has spent countless hours glued to various screens, I must say that this upcoming month is shaping up to be quite the televisual feast! From the return of fan favorites like “The Voice” and “Chicago Med,” to brand new offerings such as “Twilight of the Gods” on Netflix or “Matlock” reboot on CBS, there’s something for everyone.

As the summer breeze fades away, I find myself excitedly anticipating the return of my favorite shows on TV this September! Let me share some of the most intriguing highlights with you!

In contrast to last September which was quite challenging due to strikes interrupting the usual fall TV lineup, this year has been a refreshing change. Networks are eagerly presenting fresh content, and interestingly, even cable and streaming platforms are following suit!

This month brings back beloved classics such as “Grey’s Anatomy,” the “One Chicago” series, “Survivor,” and numerous network shows, while streamers also have some exciting offerings. With so much content to explore, here are some top picks for what you shouldn’t miss this September on your TV screens!

Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist (Peacock, September 5)

September 2024: 123 shows on TV and streaming to watch this month

A stellar ensemble, including Kevin Hart, Taraji P. Henson, Terrance Howard, Samuel L. Jackson, and others, graces this remarkable account of real-life events. In 1970, when Muhammad Ali stages his legendary comeback fight, a group of criminals targets the wealthiest residents in Atlanta. Unfairly accused of the crime, a small-time crook forms an unexpected partnership with a police officer to unmask the true culprits. Prepare for a blend of captivating period drama and top-notch acting talent as you immerse yourself in this thrilling tale of crime.

Tulsa King (Paramount+, September 15)

September 2024: 123 shows on TV and streaming to watch this month

In the second season of the recent crime drama, Sylvester Stallone reappears. The narrative kicks off with Dwight being taken into custody, potentially implicating his DEA partner to secure his release. Even if he manages to dodge prison time, Dwight stands threatened by former associates and a Kansas City mobster (Frank Grillo), who dislikes competition. Consequently, Dwight might be on the brink of a major conflict that promises to make season 2 more enticing than the inaugural one.

High Potential (ABC, September 17)

September 2024: 123 shows on TV and streaming to watch this month

Originally designed for last year, ABC’s fresh series would have been perfect for fans who enjoy shows similar to Castle. The story revolves around Kaitlin Olson, a cleaning lady at a police station, who leaves the veteran cops astounded as she solves an intricate murder case effortlessly. It’s later revealed that this single mom has a high IQ and an unusual approach to problem-solving, leading to her recruitment as a consultant. Anticipate some entertaining antics involving our ordinary heroine interacting with the cops, adding to the growing list of successful mystery-comedy series on TV.

Agatha All Along (Disney+ September 18)

September 2024: 123 shows on TV and streaming to watch this month

As a gamer, I’m super pumped about the latest MCU entry that brings back Kathryn Hahn as the captivating Agatha Harkness from WandaVision. After being stripped of her powers, Agatha recovers her memories and promptly embarks on a hunt for fresh dark magic. This pursuit leads her to gather an eclectic group of witches, including Aubrey Plaza and Broadway sensation Patti LuPone, though Agatha has secret agendas for this coven. Though it’s still a while till Halloween, this show is shaping up to be quite the enchanting experience for TV enthusiasts like myself!

The Penguin (HBO/Max, September 19)

September 2024: 123 shows on TV and streaming to watch this month

Starting from where “The Batman” ended in 2022, Gotham City finds itself in turmoil due to a massive flood. Seizing this chance, Oswald Cobblepot (played by Colin Farrell) aims to assume the role of Gotham’s new crime lord. The Falcone family, led by Salvatore (portrayed by Clancy Brown), poses the primary challenge, with Cristin Milioti playing Sofia, Carmine’s unstable daughter. Though the makeup used on Farrell is astonishing, it’s even more intriguing to watch him portray the Penguin as he seizes control and demonstrates that Batman isn’t necessary for a captivating Gotham City series.

Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story (Netflix, September 19)

September 2024: 123 shows on TV and streaming to watch this month

Once again, Ryan Murphy is stirring up intrigue with the second installment of his Netflix anthology series. This time, he delves into the notorious case of Lyle and Erik Menendez (portrayed by Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Cooper Koch), who were convicted for the gruesome murders of their parents. While the boys asserted they were retaliating against years of abuse, the prosecution maintained it was all about greed. In this gripping tale, Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny take on the roles of the parents, with Nathan Lane as a detective and Ari Graynor as their defense lawyer. If there’s anyone who can add more thrill to this captivating story, it’s Murphy.

Matlock (CBS, September 22)

September 2024: 123 shows on TV and streaming to watch this month

As a fervent admirer, I’d say it’s not exactly a revival of the ’80s Andy Griffith show, but it does bear some striking resemblances. The esteemed Kathy Bates steps back into the spotlight on television, this time as Madeline “Matty” Matlock – a seasoned attorney who once shone brightly, now moving to a top-tier law firm. She strategically leverages her age to be underestimated by others, all while harboring a secret motive to join this prestigious firm. With a star-studded cast featuring Beau Bridges and Jason Ritter, among others, it promises to be a triumphant return for Bates, showcasing once more the exceptional talent she possesses.

Rescue: Hi-Surf (Fox, September 22)

September 2024: 123 shows on TV and streaming to watch this month

Approximately two decades following the end of Baywatch’s run, we are blessed with a worthy successor by Fox. The new drama series focuses on the lifeguards patrolling one of the busiest and perilous stretches of ocean in Hawaii, where daily rescues are common. The cast appears promising, as it promises intriguing interpersonal dynamics and undoubtedly some romantic entanglements. Pairing with 911: Lone Star, it’s shaping up to be another Fox series that you won’t want to miss, offering a delightful escape to the beach this fall.

Brilliant Minds (NBC, September 23)

September 2024: 123 shows on TV and streaming to watch this month

NBC returns to the realm of medical dramas with a fresh series inspired by the life of Dr. Oliver Sacks. In this new series, Zachary Quinto portrays pioneering neurologist Dr. Oliver Wolf, who heads a team dedicated to uncovering the enigmas of the human mind. Using unconventional techniques, they strive to aid individuals afflicted by unusual mental conditions and achieve remarkable outcomes. Notable guest stars like Mandy Patinkin contribute to the show, while Quinto’s portrayal of a groundbreaking doctor could pave the way for another hit series on NBC.

Murder in a Small Town (Fox, September 24)

September 2024: 123 shows on TV and streaming to watch this month

As a fervent admirer, I must say that the latest Fox mystery drama seems to be offering a more leisurely take on crime than its title suggests. In this production, Rossif Sutherland portrays a cop who decides to unwind in a tranquil Pacific Northwest town. However, it appears that this seemingly peaceful locale harbors a multitude of secrets, many of which revolve around murder. As the story unfolds, it’s up to Sutherland to unravel these mysteries. Kristen Kreuk graces our screens as the librarian and Sutherland’s romantic interest. The shift from somber mystery to a more lighthearted tone makes this an intriguing series that I can’t wait to delve into.

Doctor Odyssey (ABC, September 26)

September 2024: 123 shows on TV and streaming to watch this month

Hey there! Ever nostalgic about The Love Boat? Well, here’s a contemporary take, but this time centered around medical emergencies rather than romantic escapades. Previously a renowned surgeon, Joshua Jackson had a close call during the COVID-19 pandemic and decided to take a more relaxed role as the chief medical officer aboard a cruise ship. Meanwhile, Don Johnson re-emerges on our screens as the captain, with an ever-changing roster of stars lending their talents to portray occasional crises. With an engaging cast and captivating setting, hop aboard for a thrilling ride through the world of medical drama!
