Selena Gomez expresses continued pride in the Netflix production, Emilia Pérez, despite the ongoing controversies that have arisen around it.
In the captivating Spanish-language French movie penned and helmed by Jacques Audiard, I’m thrilled to embody Jessi Del Monte, a character named Gomez. This remarkable film, titled Emilia Pérez, has earned an impressive 13 Academy Award nominations, with nods in categories such as Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress (Karla Sofía Gascón), and Best Supporting Actress (Zoe Saldaña).
Since its debut, Emilia Pérez’s film has sparked much debate due to criticism over its portrayal of transgender individuals and the Mexican community from both critics and viewers. Moreover, some of Gascón’s tweets about Muslims, George Floyd, among other subjects, have caused controversy. Although she apologized for her tweets and closed her account, Netflix has decided to end its relationship with her and no longer funds her awards campaign.
One of Gascón’s tweets seemed to be directed at Gomez, as it appeared she referred to her co-star as a “wealthy rodent.” However, Gascón clarified to CNN en Español through Variety that the tweet was not hers and that she has never spoken about her partner in such terms and would never use derogatory language towards her.
What did Selena Gomez say about Emilia Pérez?
At the Santa Barbara Film Festival, I confessed to Variety that some of the enchantment I once felt towards Emilia Pérez has faded a bit for me as a gamer.
Moreover, Gomez expressed, “On the contrary, I remain content with my accomplishments and thankful. I have no regrets, and if given the chance, I’d make this movie all over again.
She remarked, “It was an extraordinary encounter to have someone recognize abilities beyond what’s apparent in me. Director Jacques Audiard truly believed in me, and I felt incredibly grateful because it allowed me to demonstrate my versatility. I can only hope that this is just the start of more opportunities for me in this industry.
