2023 was an unforgettable year for gaming enthusiasts with a tremendous influx of top-notch games. Notably, some prominent publishers released fan favorites, but it was Sega that truly shone with hits like Metaphor: ReFantazio and Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth. This year, according to Metacritic‘s most recent annual rankings, Sega claims the top spot in the 2024 game publisher standings.
Yesterday, Metacritic unveiled its 15th Annual Game Publisher Rankings. This ranking system evaluates the scores of games produced by the year’s most productive publishers, using a mathematical formula to assign points. In this competition, Sega emerged victorious with 325.5 points, narrowly surpassing Capcom (323.1) for the top spot.
On three separate instances, Sega has earned the title of Metacritic’s top publisher, making it the first company to do so multiple times. Previously, they ranked ninth in this category last year as the publisher behind popular franchises like Sonic and Persona.
At Shacknews, we bestowed upon Sega the title of Top Publisher of 2024 during our annual awards ceremony. We particularly highlighted standout games such as Persona 3 Reload and Metaphor: ReFantazio, which we believe elevated Sega to a league above their competitors within the gaming industry.
