Seasmoke choosing his rider in House of the Dragon is everything

As a dedicated fan of “House of the Dragon,” I am deeply invested in the storyline of Rhaenyra and her quest for more dragonriders to strengthen her forces. The recent turn of events with Seasmoke, Rhaenyra’s dragon, has left me both intrigued and hopeful.

In the “House of the Dragon,” Rhaenyra is in need of additional dragon riders. To accomplish this, she must search for dragonseed candidates. She believed she discovered a potential one in the latest episode, but things took a turn for the worse. However, this unfortunate outcome does not signal the end of her quest.

As a gamer, I’d put it this way: When my preferred dragonrider for Seasmoke passed away, I hesitated to choose another one. My husband’s dragon, fortunately still alive, didn’t approve of the idea either. The dragons on Dragonstone aren’t kept in cages like those in King’s Landing, so they make their own decisions – and this dragon wasn’t having it.

Seasmoke didn’t merely abandon Rhaenyra; instead, he yearns for a connection with a rider. It’s possible that Leanor is deceased or that Seasmoke thinks she is, but either way, he’s eager to find a new rider. And now, he has.

Seasmoke wanted to keep it in the family in House of the Dragon

Seasmoke makes its way to Driftmark, causing alarm among the population. Given the ongoing civil conflict, this reaction is understandable, as the fearsome dragon Vhagar poses a constant threat and may unleash destruction unexpectedly. The residents of Driftmark had no intention of providing her with such an opportunity.

Addam from Hull also fled, but it proved more challenging for him since this dragon had a personal vendetta against him.

Seasmoke will recognize Addam as Corlys’s son, making them half-brothers to Leanor. Seasmoke doesn’t distinguish between legitimate and illegitimate offspring; it only recognizes Velaryon lineage. The intriguing implication is that Seasmoke remains devoted to the Velaryon family, with Addam being its new rider being an unexpected yet delightful connection.

It’s possible that Seasmoke has suspicions about Leanor’s death. After all, dragons typically have only one rider. But what if Seasmoke makes an exception for a close relative and look-alike of his previous rider?

Seasmoke, too, seems to yearn for what has long eluded Addam. Addam harbors a deep desire to belong to the Velaryon dynasty and gain his father’s acknowledgment. Riding a dragon presents him with an opportunity to achieve this goal. It is possible that Seasmoke intuitively senses Addam’s longing for recognition and may be encouraging Corlys to acknowledge him as well.
