Christopher Landon, director of Scream 7, has recently shared his unpleasant ordeal following accusations from certain fans who attributed his role in the controversial termination of Melissa Barrera. In late 2023, it was unexpectedly announced that Barrera, set to star in Scream VI, had been let go by Spyglass Media Group due to her expression of opinion on the Israel-Hamas conflict via social media.
In March 2024, Kevin Williamson took over directing duties from Landon for the seventh film installment, with Guy Busick handling the script. The upcoming sequel will feature franchise veterans Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox reprising their beloved roles as Sidney Prescott and Gale Weathers respectively. The movie is scheduled to hit cinemas on February 27, 2026.
Former Scream 7 director recalls receiving death threats
In a recent conversation, Landon mentioned one key factor that led him to leave Scream 7. After the unexpected termination of Barrera and the departure of Jenna Ortega, the director of Happy Death Day began receiving menacing messages aimed at his children following a series of death threats.
He disclosed that he received messages warning, “‘I will locate your children, and I will kill them as you back child killing,'” which was troubling. The head of security at multiple production companies and the FBI needed to assess these threatening statements. They were extremely aggressive and genuinely terrifying.
Furthermore, Landon has shed light on the speculations surrounding his involvement in Barrera’s dismissal from Scream 7. He made it clear that contrary to popular belief, he was not involved in the studio’s choice to remove Barrera from the sequel.
He clarified that he was not responsible for her termination, despite rumors suggesting otherwise. He asserted that he had no influence over the situation. In a world where many don’t fully grasp Hollywood’s inner workings and power dynamics, the public mistakenly assumed his involvement, leading to backlash.
In the upcoming Scream installment, we’ll see the return of Matthew Lillard as Stu Macher, David Arquette as Dewey Riley, and Scott Foley as Roman Bridger, who are reprising their roles despite their characters having ‘met their ends’ in different Scream movies – 1996, 2022, and 2000 respectively. Notably, Jasmin Savoy Brown’s Mindy Meeks-Martin and Mason Gooding’s Chad Meeks-Martin are also set to appear in the next sequel. Moreover, newcomers like Isabel May, Celeste O’Connor, Asa Germann, Mckenna Grace, Joel McHale, Anna Camp, Mark Consuelos, Ethan Embry, Sam Rechner, Michelle Randolph, and Jimmy Tatro are also joining the franchise for this installment.
