Scott Pilgrim Takes Off Canceled at Netflix Before Season 2

As a dedicated fan who has followed the journey of Scott Pilgrim since its comic book origins, I must admit that I’m left with a bittersweet feeling upon hearing the news of Scott Pilgrim Takes Off‘s cancellation. While it’s disheartening to see a series that felt like a breath of fresh air in the anime action-adventure genre come to an end so abruptly, I can’t help but appreciate the beautiful symphony Bryan Lee O’Malley and his team conducted over the past year.

Netflix chose not to renew the anime action-adventure show “Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World” for a second season, which was set to premiere after its initial debut on November 17, 2023, consisting of eight episodes. The series originally aired on their streaming platform.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off officially canceled after Season 1

Bryan Lee O’Malley, one of the creators and top producers, announced via his platform (previously Twitter) that there won’t be a second season for the series. O’Malley is known as both the writer and cartoonist behind the original Scott Pilgrim comic book series.

Exactly a year ago, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off was released, and it was an incredible experience collaborating with everyone involved from different corners of the globe,” O’Malley stated. “Every day was like directing a symphony orchestra. From the moment [BenDavid Grabinski] ignited the idea, this project seemed like a unique miracle.

In a subsequent post, O’Malley clarified, “To be clear, the show won’t be coming back. Remember, we had planned for just one season and went to great lengths to make it happen. Given these circumstances, producing more episodes would have been extremely difficult. I understand some of you may have been hoping otherwise.

Initially, O’Malley stated that they intended to create just one season of the series. However, the conclusion of Season 1 subtly suggested that there might be additional content. The eighth episode features a scene at the end of the credits, where Julie Powers and Gordon “Gideon Graves” Goose appear to be hatching a sinister plot against Scott and Ramona. In response to a fan’s inquiry about this mid-credits scene, O’Malley wrote, “This is a happily ever after.” This implies that there could potentially be more unfolding in the series beyond what has been shown so far.

Significantly, in addition to the popular series, the Scott Pilgrim comics have sparked a video game, an animated short, and the 2010 film Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, directed by Edgar Wright and starring Michael Cera as Scott. The cast of the 2010 movie returned to voice their characters in the English version of Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, with Cera and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Ramona Flowers included among them.
