Scott Peterson: Who Is the Convicted Murderer’s Former Lawyer Mark Geragos?

As a dedicated follower of legal dramas and a connoisseur of high-profile court cases, I must say that Mark Geragos is nothing short of a modern-day Atticus Finch, albeit with a more flamboyant style. His career, spanning decades and touching the lives of some of the most controversial figures in recent history, has made him a household name in legal circles.

Netflix’s documentary titled “American Murder: Laci Peterson” chronicles the events leading up to Scott Peterson‘s arrest for the murder of his wife, Laci Peterson. On December 24, 2002, Laci vanished from her home. Four months later, her body was found on the coastline of Point Isabel, which led to Peterson’s arrest. The case eventually went to court, with well-known lawyer Mark Geragos taking up Peterson’s defense.

As reported by KRDO News, Mark Geragos began practicing law in California in 1983 and subsequently joined the law firm he co-founded with his father, Geragos & Geragos. In 1997, Geragos gained notoriety when he took on Susan McDougal as a client, who was involved in the Whitewater case. Although she was found guilty of fraud in that trial, Geragos represented her in an embezzlement case where she was ultimately acquitted. Throughout his career, Geragos has also represented high-profile clients such as Michael Jackson, rapper Nate Dogg, Gary Condit, Winona Ryder, Colin Kaepernick, and Jussie Smollett.

According to the documentary, Mark Geragos joined Scott Peterson’s legal team due to his frequent appearances on Larry King Live. He often discussed the case and at one point stated that while people may criticize Peterson for his character faults, this doesn’t prove he is a murderer. Consequently, the Peterson family retained Mark Geragos as Scott Peterson’s attorney during Laci Peterson’s murder trial.

Who is Scott Peterson’s former lawyer, Mark Geragos?

At the trial, attorney Mark Geragos aimed to demonstrate Scott Peterson’s innocence regarding the murder of Laci Peterson. To begin with, he contradicted the prosecution by claiming that Peterson had lied about Laci watching TV before she went missing. Furthermore, he cast doubt on the reliability of certain investigating officers and hinted at a possible link between burglary and her disappearance. However, Amber Frey’s testimony turned the case around entirely.

In the trial, lawyer Mark Geragos interrogated Frey about her relationship with Scott Peterson. According to the documentary, Frey stated that Geragos became upset when she didn’t respond to his inquiries as he assumed. Despite Geragos’ attempts to portray Peterson as blameless, the jury ultimately convicted him and handed down a death penalty verdict. However, in August 2021, the court overturned the death sentence and instead sentenced him to life in prison.

In January 2024, the Los Angeles Innocence Project submitted an appeal on behalf of Scott Peterson. According to People Magazine, this organization presented “new evidence” that suggests Peterson is not guilty and was not involved in the disappearance and murder of his wife, Laci Peterson. Following the appeal, attorney Mark Geragos expressed optimism about Peterson’s chances for release. Geragos told People Magazine, “I do believe so. I’ve always felt this way. This is someone who has been criticized for 20 years for daring to say that I think he’s innocent.”

American Murder: Laci Peterson is available to stream on Netflix.
