Scarlett Johansson expresses that she thinks “Avengers: Endgame” deserved a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars. This film was released in 2019 and marked the conclusion for numerous storylines within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In it, Scarlett Johansson reappeared as Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow. Although her character met her end in “Endgame”, she led the cast of the 2021 movie “Black Widow”, which unfolded events prior to Avengers 4.
Scarlett Johansson thinks Avengers: Endgame should’ve got a Best Picture Oscar nomination
During a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Johansson expressed her surprise that Avengers: Endgame didn’t receive significant recognition at the Oscars in 2019. She believed that the movie’s commercial success should not have influenced the Academy’s response to it. In her opinion, Endgame deserved a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars due to its unique and remarkable execution as a film, which she described as “an impossible movie that should not have worked, but really does.” She added that it is one of the most successful films ever made.
As a devoted film enthusiast, I can’t help but reflect on the 92nd Academy Awards, where Marvel’s Endgame was only nominated for Best Visual Effects. Although it didn’t take home the prize (which went to the war drama 1917), it was an honor to see such a remarkable film recognized alongside some truly outstanding productions that year. The nominees for Best Picture included 1917, Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood, Ford v Ferrari, The Irishman, Parasite, Jojo Rabbit, Joker, Little Women, and Marriage Story. In the end, it was Bong Joon-ho’s masterful work, Parasite, that stole the show and became the victor. Quite a memorable evening for film lovers everywhere!
As of 2025, the only MCU movie to receive a Best Picture Oscar nomination is Black Panther (2018).
Despite not receiving an Oscar, Marvel Studios’ Endgame garnered numerous accolades such as Saturn Awards, People’s Choice Awards, Annie Award, Lumiere Award, and others. As Scarlett Johansson points out, Endgame holds the title of the second highest-grossing film ever made, trailing behind James Cameron’s Avatar (2009). On Rotten Tomatoes, it boasts a 94% approval rating with 552 reviews and a Metacritic score of 78 out of 100 after 57 critic evaluations, suggesting a predominantly positive reception.
