Following Aimee Lou Wood’s open critique of Saturday Night Live, the team has since extended an apology to her in response.
Saturday Night Live
For half a century, Saturday Night Live (SNL) has been a dominant force in U.S. comedy, broadcasting live on NBC every week since 1975. Spanning over 985 episodes across 50 seasons, it has played a pivotal role in launching the careers of numerous American comedians and attracts millions of viewers.
This program explores diverse subjects, including spoofs of television shows and often politically slanted humor. Recently, they combined these elements in a sketch titled “_The White POTUS_.
The skit was a humorous take on the popular American anthology series, “The White Lotus,” which is recognized for its sharp wit and intense dramatics. This satire specifically focused on the Trump family, given that “POTUS” signifies “President of the United States.
Simultaneously, the caricature not only mirrored genuine characters from “White Lotus”, but it particularly mocked Aimee Lou Wood’s character, portrayed by comedian Sarah Sherman. However, the humor in the sketch centered entirely around jests about the actress’s physical appearance.
Complaint And Apology
In reaction to the drawing, the actress openly expressed on Instagram that she thought it was “rude and not funny.” Despite receiving criticism from several people for expressing her opinion, TV host Ashley James, among others, appreciated her bravery for standing up for herself.
She mentioned she’s usually amenable to satire, but a “more intelligent, subtler approach” would be preferable. It’s true – SNL didn’t poke fun at the appearances of other White Lotus characters, only hers. Understandably, feeling targeted in that circumstance is relatable.
It’s possible that this is the reason SNL chose to apologize – shortly afterward, she announced on Instagram that she had received an apology from the show. In its 50-year run, such apologies are quite uncommon for SNL.
Viewers Have Mixed Opinions
Audience opinions varied as to whether Saturday Night Live needed to issue an apology or not, with some stating that Trump’s portrayal in the skit was itself a target of mockery.
However, it’s worth noting that if Trump took offense to jokes about his appearance, he has the power to make a change. He could opt for a different shade of tan or find another hairstylist. The aspects of his look that are being ridiculed are matters of personal style, not inherent traits.
Aimee Lou Wood’s teeth are as nature intended, and altering them would come at a high cost, potentially causing discomfort and requiring considerable effort. It’s likely that those who expect her to simply brush off such comments wouldn’t appreciate the same scrutiny directed towards a physical trait they were born with, one they might even feel self-conscious about, being exposed to millions of viewers.
What do you think, was the complaint justified?
