As a seasoned gamer and attendee of numerous conventions, I must say that The Gathering 2024 at the World War I Museum was undoubtedly a bittersweet event to remember. From its humble beginnings with Gina Phipps-Hubbell, this convention has grown into a unique experience that transcends mere fandom.
Another Gathering is behind us. Sasnak City: The Gathering 2024 was the last one to take place in the World War I Museum. Let’s take a look back at what happened. What worked? What didn’t? Here’s our review.
Without a shadow of a doubt, The Gathering 2024 was a deeply emotional event. The World War I Museum in Kansas City, Missouri has served as the venue for this convention since its inception. It all began with the first Gathering, and Gina Phipps-Hubbell, the creative force behind it, has nurtured it over the years. There are more events planned for the future, but the exact location for these will be revealed at a later time.
The focus was on saying goodbye to the venue. It’s not a goodbye to everyone else, though.
Dedications to Sasnak Sisters past
2024’s Gathering had a heartfelt moment remembering some of the Sasnak Sisters who left us, including our cherished Mary T. Walker, whose spirit lingers on in our gaming community. You see, it was Sasnak City and Mary herself that applied for writing positions! The inaugural recipient of an Angel Donation was graced with the Mary Walker Memorial Package – a badge upgrade and a fresh swag bag. This touching gesture was made by John Bell, making this moment truly unforgettable.
At the intimate gatherings in Sasnak City, attendees frequently forge deep connections, resembling a close-knit family. The compact scale of these events fosters opportunities for people to mingle and converse about more than just Outlander; they discuss a wide range of topics. This is why Sasnak City has earned the nicknames Sisterhood and Brotherhood, as it truly embodies this bond.
A packed schedule that mostly worked out perfectly
The schedules for both Fridays and Sundays ran smoothly. Every event stuck to its planned schedule, and attendees had opportunities to socialize and browse through the vendor stalls.
On Saturday, we encountered a problem, partially caused by delayed photo-taking and to some extent, the participants themselves. To ensure transparency, Sasnak City made announcements via a large screen in the foyer and had staff members scattered throughout the venue ready to address any queries.
It is so important for attendees to listen. I noticed a couple of times during the event that people missed things or were late because they didn’t listen to their name being called. Meet & Greets can’t be made up, so those have to be a high priority item when it comes to listening to instructions. The team members will do everything they can to get people through the photo lines quickly and there is always time to make up the photos and autographs if they’re missed, especially due to a Meet & Greet. So, following instructions is a must.
At The Gathering 2024, we saw a higher-than-usual number of participants – a total of 10 cast members joined us. This larger attendance resulted in a busier schedule with more activities taking place. Additionally, due to recent modifications at the World War I Museum, our photo sessions were moved to a new location, requiring a bit more walking and some additional planning for those using the elevator.
In my role as a passionate visitor of Sasnak City, I’ve come to appreciate the unique challenges we faced regarding elevator usage, all thanks to the restrictions at the World War I Museum. When our team encountered an issue, we were determined to find a solution. However, it’s important for attendees to remember that when our team members speak up, it’s crucial for everyone to listen. I get that excitement runs high and conversations with friends are tempting, but when our team is sharing their insights, it’s essential to quiet down so we can all hear clearly—and so you can fully appreciate the experience too!
All in all, the event was another triumph, yet tinged with sweet-sadness. With every passing year, we’ve seen growth as our team members learn from past blunders and devise strategies to tackle problems. The upcoming change of venue in 2025 promises an exciting twist, but given their track record, I have no doubt that the Sasnak City team will rise to any challenge presented.
