The ex-AEW Women’s World Champion, famously known as Saraya, who previously made a name for herself as a WWE Superstar, has declared that she is almost at the conclusion of her wrestling journey. Saraya rejuvenated her career following her retirement from WWE in 2018.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but reflect on the heart-wrenching story of Saraya, who was once known as Paige in WWE. In 2017, during a live event, Mercedes Mone delivered a devastating backkick that left Saraya grappling with a career-altering neck injury. This unfortunate incident ultimately compelled her to hang up her wrestling boots and retire in the year of 2018.
With a strong resolve to come back, Saraya dedicated herself to rehabilitation. Upon the expiration of her WWE contract in 2022, she joined AEW and made her ring comeback at AEW Full Gear, where she beat Britt Baker. Since then, she’s solidified her position as a leading star within AEW’s women’s division.
2023 saw Saraya clinching the AEW Women’s World Championship at All In event held at Wembley Stadium, London – her native land. However, despite this victory, she had a brief tenure as champion and has experienced several defeats within AEW in recent years.
Since October 8th, Saraya has been absent from AEW television following her loss to Willow Nightingale in a match involving Jamie Hayter and Nyla Rose, leading some to speculate about a potential injury. However, she’s put those rumors to rest by stating that she’s not injured. More recently, she’s made an unexpected announcement – her wrestling career is approaching its conclusion.
AEW star Saraya on her retirement: ‘It’s very soon’
During an interview with Sports Illustrated, Saraya spoke about her wrestling journey and hinted that her active ring career may be nearing its conclusion. As she reflected on her recent series of defeats in AEW, she shared that her primary aim has been to help emerging talents shine brighter.
She expressed, “I’ve been losing fights from all sides, and I just wanted to give others their due victory. My goal is to inspire everyone. Wrestling won’t be a part of my life forever – it’s approaching its end soon. I don’t want to retire while still needing to prove myself as the best.
Saraya has been out of action in AEW for more than five months now, while Toni Storm is the current AEW Women’s Champion. As her career approaches its conclusion, will she return to challenge for the title one last time and enjoy a final victorious reign? We’ll just have to wait and see.
