Sammy Hagar and Alex Van Halen used to be members of the iconic rock group Van Halen, but their bond has been frayed for more than two decades. The circumstances surrounding their estrangement have generated much discussion, leaving many curious as to the causes behind it.
Why are Sammy Hagar and Alex Van Halen feuding?
For more than two decades now, the long-standing disagreement between Sammy Hagar and Alex Van Halen shows no signs of ending. In a recent chat with Rolling Stone magazine, Hagar revealed that he and the Van Halen drummer haven’t exchanged words for 21 years.
Hagar implied that Alex could be resentful since Hagar and bassist Michael Anthony are still performing Van Halen songs live, while Alex cannot due to not being a singer or guitar player. Hagar explained, “I believe Alex is frustrated because I’m doing it, and Mike and I are doing it, while he can’t. He isn’t a vocalist, he isn’t a guitarist, and he isn’t the band leader.” Moreover, Hagar suggested that Alex seems disinterested in playing drums or unable to do so anymore, and he can’t create new music as he wasn’t the main songwriter in the group.
Additionally, Hagar noted that it was often Eddie Van Halen, rather than Alex, who served as the primary songwriter within the band. As far as Hagar is concerned, the majority of their music was crafted through collaborations between Eddie and either David Lee Roth or himself. Given that Hagar and bassist Michael Anthony continue to perform Van Halen’s songs on tour, Hagar believes this arrangement could potentially be a source of contention for Alex.
Regardless of the circumstances, Hagar maintains that he bears no ill will towards Al, stating, “Al, you’re okay. Just give me some space. I’ll respect your space too.” Additionally, Hagar emphasized that he continues to preserve the band’s name and music by performing it.
In Alex Van Halen’s 2024 memoir “Brothers”, the drummer failed to discuss Sammy Hagar during his career. As stated in a previous 2024 interview, due to health problems related to a spinal injury, it has become challenging for him to perform on drums.
