Saint Laurent Reissues Charlotte Perriand Furniture for Salone del Mobile

Next month, during the Milano Furniture Fair (Salone del Mobile), Yves Saint Laurent will be bringing back select furniture designs by Charlotte Perriand as limited-edition releases.

Entitled “Saint Laurent — Charlotte Perrian“, the upcoming exhibition will showcase four unique pieces designed by the late French architect and fashion designer, dating from 1943 to 1967. These selected items have been handpicked by Saint Laurent’s current creative director, Anthony Vaccarello. Remarkably, each piece will be custom-made upon request for those who wish to acquire a piece of this esteemed designer’s work.

As a devoted admirer, I’ve taken note of some fascinating pieces over the years. For instance, Perriand’s Rio de Janeiro bookcase, designed for her husband Jacques Martin in 1962, has graced exhibitions only three times in the past 25 years. On the other hand, the Indochina guest armchair, originally conceived in 1943, was painstakingly replicated by Saint Laurent from an illustration because the original piece was sadly lost.

In another location, the Mille-feuilles table, initially conceived in 1963, initially functioned as a miniature replica due to its complex construction, featuring ten layers of two distinct types of wood, being too challenging to produce on a larger scale. Completing the display is a sofa that Perriand designed for the Japanese ambassador’s Paris residence in 1967.

Saint Laurent’s collaboration with Charlotte Perriand represents their continuous dedication to preserving tradition. This alliance aims to make significant design pieces, which were once buried in unreachable archives, more accessible for a broader public,” the brand communicated to WWD.

This statement can be rephrased as follows: “It reflects Yves Saint Laurent’s admiration for Perriand’s work, whose clean modernity mirrored his own creations. He amassed her designs throughout his life, and Pierre Bergé sponsored significant global exhibitions showcasing her work.

Starting from April 8th through 13th, Saint Laurent’s revamped collaboration with Charlotte Periand will be showcased at the Padiglione Visconti in Milan. Don’t forget to check out these designs displayed in the gallery above!
