The labor action initiated by SAG-AFTRA back in September 2023 has concluded, as their members have given their approval to a fresh agreement. This contract includes enhanced remuneration for performers until November 2027, along with several stipulations regarding the application of AI.
On July 9, 2025, SAG-AFTRA declared that its members have endorsed the 2025 Interactive Media Agreement with a vote of 95.04% to 4.96%. This marks the conclusion of the strike, which they had previously suspended while waiting for the agreement’s ratification.
In this contract, SAG-AFTRA members receive numerous advantages to safeguard their professions and future. Upon approval, there’s a substantial boost of 15.17% to the performer’s compensation rate. Additionally, they will experience a 3% raise in November of 2025, 2026, and 2027. Furthermore, contributions to the AFTRA Retirement Fund are now set at 17% (previously 16.5%) and will rise again in October 2026 to 17.5%.
As a passionate enthusiast, I can’t help but highlight an exciting aspect that caught my attention – artificial intelligence (AI). It’s been making significant strides, finding its way into numerous major industries. The recent SAG-AFTRA announcement is no exception, as it underscores safety measures and rights for performers in the AI realm. Specifically, this contract ensures performer safety, consent, and disclosure when AI digital replicas are used. Furthermore, it grants performers the power to suspend their consent for the creation of new content during a strike.
Fran Drescher, SAG-AFTRA President, praises Sarah Elmaleh’s resilient leadership as Interactive Media Agreement Negotiating Chair. For three years, she held her ground amidst tough negotiations and numerous obstacles during a particularly difficult negotiation period. In a statement, Drescher said, “I applaud this deal that makes significant strides in A.I. protections. Progress is always the goal! My heartfelt admiration extends to the entire video game performer community and their supporters for their unity throughout the strike, which played a crucial role in securing this agreement’s numerous vital advancements.
This moment represents a crucial turning point for the video game sector, arriving at an opportune time. The rapid expansion of AI has brought about a potential threat to creatives, whose work may be unlawfully used by tech firms to educate their tools. Disney and Universal have taken legal action against Midjourney, describing the platform as a “vast well of plagiarism,” an understatement of its true nature.
Today’s outcome with SAG-AFTRA signifies a positive stride towards safeguarding workers and the beloved sectors we value. For further details, please explore our Unionization section.
