As a seasoned gamer with decades of immersion in virtual worlds, I can’t help but feel a sense of camaraderie with these voice actors who have taken a stand for fair compensation and working conditions. Having spent countless hours interacting with their characters, I’ve come to appreciate the depth and emotion they bring to our favorite games.
Over the summer, I found myself joining forces with fellow gaming enthusiasts as we stood united in a strike. Our beloved actors, who breathe life into our favorite video games, took a stand because the major studios hadn’t managed to hammer out an agreement for a fresh contract with our union, SAG-AFTRA. The dialogue between these two parties came to a halt in July, but we were recently informed by SAG-AFTRA that they will reopen negotiations with the video game companies next week.
SAG-AFTRA announced this morning they’ll start negotiating a fresh contract with video game companies on October 23rd. This is the initial step in active discussions for a new agreement, as the strike commenced on July 25th.
This coalition, referred to as the convenience bargaining group, encompasses entities such as Activision, Disney, EA, Insomniac Games, Take-Two Interactive, and WB Games, along with others. Recently, SAG-AFTRA didn’t express dissatisfaction towards specific games from these companies; however, they did issue a strike against League of Legends last month, alleging that Formosa Interactive has been engaging in unfair labor practices.
As SAG-AFTRA and video game production companies are set to continue their talks next week, we’ll keep a close eye out for updates regarding a potential new agreement for voice artists and in-game performers.
