As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for challenging experiences, I found Form.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl to be an exhilarating and unforgiving journey that harkens back to the days of survival horror classics. The game’s scarce resources and relentless enemies make for a tense, nerve-wracking experience where every bullet counts and every step is fraught with danger.
Initially, the first S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game slipped under many radars upon its initial release, but swiftly transformed into a treasure of its time. At that point, GSC Game World was an unrecognized studio based in Ukraine, yet their debut game sparked a sensation in its native land and garnered adoration among PC gamers worldwide. The long-awaited sequel was slated to drop several years ago, but various real-life events occurred. After a global pandemic and a hostile foreign invasion, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl is now set for release, and Shacknews recently got a chance to preview it.
In the sequel to S.T.A.L.K.E.R., titled S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, the action unfolds within the same desolate landscape as the original game. The area, known as Chornobyl, has been devastated by a second nuclear disaster, transforming it into a perilous region referred to as the Zone. Players assume the persona of a new character, Skif, who accepts a task from an anonymous employer that leads him deep within the Zone’s core. Your mission involves assessing the potency of the area’s anomalies. However, things go awry during this assignment, leaving Skif to navigate as a freelance warrior in a treacherous and hostile environment filled with few allies and numerous potential adversaries who could turn on him at any moment.
It quickly becomes apparent that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl follows suit with its predecessor in numerous aspects. This is a first-person shooter that incorporates survival elements within an expansive open world. Scarcity characterizes the weaponry and resources, so a few shots can lead to death swiftly. The environment is blanketed by nuclear anomalies which have the power to disintegrate any organic matter in mere seconds. A key point to highlight is that while the core gameplay mechanics resemble the original, Heart of Chornobyl boasts sharper visuals due to Unreal Engine 5.
When GSC Game World announced their return to a once-scrapped project, they shared that they’d be using Epic’s engine for development – and let me tell you, the difference is palpable, especially during the stormy prologue. My character, Skif, was tasked with investigating an active anomaly amidst a raging tempest, equipped only with a supplied scanner. As I navigated through the game’s breathtakingly realistic weather effects, my ears were filled with the ominous warnings of radioactive activity – a soundtrack I’d soon grow accustomed to in this game.
At the conclusion of the prologue, Skif uncovers that Solder, a man he trusted, has deceived him. This leaves him stranded in Heart of Chornobyl’s expansive wilderness, devoid of weapons and with limited guidance on his next course of action. To stay alive, he must rummage through supplies hidden in caches or on corpses, seeking essential items such as food, water, weapons, ammunition, bandages, and radiation tablets. However, these vital resources are scarce and scattered far apart. Initially, his main concern is to secure safety, which necessitates traveling across the game’s vast territory towards a colony situated near the map’s center.
Town hubs are teeming with useful individuals (just make sure to stow your weapon initially), offering a glimpse into the complex factions of Chornobyl’s heart. The Duty, a military faction, maintains order in town, while a clandestine band of rebels lurks beneath their watch. Upon arrival at the town, both factions share a mutual objective: locating an elusive Stalker named Squint, each for their own motives. Players have the choice to aid either side in tracking down Squint, but doing so may strain relations with one or both of them moving forward. Unfortunately, during our gameplay session, we didn’t get to fully experience how the faction system unfolds, but many townspeople offer side quests that could leave you disappointed if Skif fails to deliver.
In an intriguing turn of events, I found myself in a unique predicament. Somehow, I’d managed to gain the consent of both the bartender Warlock and the Duty Officer to retrieve Squint for them. I guess, at some juncture, a decision would have been due on who to deliver him to, if Squint hadn’t met his end first. However, given the harsh nature of The Zone, that situation never materialized. Instead, it turned out to be another day in the life of this adventurer.
As a gamer, let me tell you from my own experience, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl offers a thrilling test of skills. It’s not just about the scarcity of resources, though that’s certainly a factor. No, there are deeper reasons why this game will keep you on your toes. The enemies in this game are as tough as they come, whether they’re roaming gangs, resilient mutants, seemingly indestructible zombies, or even ordinary dogs. Yes, you read that right – ordinary dogs can be a formidable challenge! Their speed lets them dodge bullets effortlessly, and when I found myself low on ammo, I’d run out in no time.
It’s worth mentioning that GSC Game World is collaborating on an advanced AI system for characters. Regardless if they’re in a hub world or out in the Zone, each character has a daily schedule that follows the day-night cycle. This lets players figure out when and where to encounter specific characters at various times of the day. Some characters will move around and converse, but many people I spoke with expressed no desire to chat during my playtests.
In relation to the game, the tough AI not only covers combat but also increases its difficulty. Earlier mentioned, abnormalities can swiftly destroy anything that approaches them. The sole means of passing through them is by launching a projectile, observing the blast, and sprinting past before it reactivates. After being attacked by dogs numerous times while seeking Squint, I came up with a strategy to lead them towards the anomaly, thereby conserving ammo. Interestingly, dogs aren’t as dumb as they seem. They’ll chase you, but once they see the anomaly, they’ll retreat and return to their camp posts.
In Heart of Chornobyl, players are frequently confronted with death and have a running tally of their demise. While it may seem like the game is trying to tease or frustrate the player, its purpose is more about encouraging experimentation in strategies. I found myself repeatedly attacked by dogs until I tried a different approach – scaling an exterior wall of one camp allowed me entry into an unoccupied building where I located my target. However, this individual had information on Squint but also intended to end my life. Faced with no money for peaceful departure, violence became necessary. With limited ammunition, I narrowly escaped a 1-on-3 firefight. Just as I was ready to cheer my victory, the noise attracted the attention of the dogs outside who burst in and attacked me once more.
The core appeal that promises an engaging and enjoyable playthrough for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl lies in its rich narrative landscape. With a multitude of opportunities to aid, converse, provoke, bond with characters, and countless ways for sub-plots and missions to take unexpected turns, Heart of Chornobyl offers an immersive video game journey. This experience is unique and can be recounted among friends, as each tale unfolds differently. Moreover, the game’s potential for customizable weapon combinations and diverse mutant species adds even more layers to this captivating adventure.
On Wednesday, November 20, the highly anticipated game, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl, will begin narrating its tale on both PC and Xbox Series X|S platforms.
As someone who has been following video games since the days of the original Xbox, I was thrilled to attend a recent closed press event in Culver City, CA, where I got a sneak peek at the Xbox Series X|S build. Although it’s important to note that what I saw may not be exactly how the final product will look, my initial impressions were quite positive. The smooth gameplay and impressive graphics left me excited for what’s to come in the future of gaming. However, as a seasoned gamer, I know all too well that changes can occur between previews and the final release, so I’ll be keeping a close eye on any updates leading up to the launch.
