Ryan Reynolds Wants To Make R-Rated Star Wars Project

Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds pitched an R-rated Star Wars project to Disney.

Reynolds gained fame for portraying Wade Wilson, a character last seen in the MCU film Deadpool & Wolverine, which premiered in 2024. This film was helmed by Shawn Levy, who is currently working on Star Wars: Starfighter, set to debut in theaters in 2027.

What did Ryan Reynolds say about his R-rated Star Wars show pitch?

On The Box Office podcast, Reynolds shared a past proposal he made to Disney; it was an adult-oriented (R-rated) Star Wars idea that he had presented.

Reynolds stated, “It doesn’t necessarily require explicitly heroic characters. There’s an array of characters you could select from.” He wasn’t referring to R-rated as crude or vulgar, but rather using the R-rating as a disguise for emotional depth. He often wonders why studios don’t take a chance on something like that more frequently.

I’m not implying I wish to participate in it directly. Such a role wouldn’t suit me. Instead, I’d prefer to contribute by producing or writing, perhaps even behind the scenes. Ideas and intellectual properties thrive on scarcity and unexpected elements. While Star Wars doesn’t offer much scarcity due to Disney+, there’s still potential for surprises.

To date, there hasn’t been a Star Wars movie or show rated R. As for the ongoing projects, it remains unconfirmed if any of them will carry an R-rating. However, director Tony Gilroy hinted that a potential Star Wars horror project might be in development at Lucasfilm.

In theaters next, we have “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” slated for release on May 22, 2026, under the direction of Jon Favreau. On the other hand, Star Wars: Starfighter, featuring Ryan Gosling, is set to hit screens on May 28, 2027.
