As a long-time fan of the Merc with a Mouth, it’s heartening to hear Ryan Reynolds talk about Deadpool’s future within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Having grown up on the character, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia seeing him finally join the ranks of the Avengers and X-Men.
Ryan Reynolds says he sees Deadpool as a supporting character moving forward in the MCU.
In 2024, Reynolds once again stepped into the shoes of Wade Wilson for Deadpool & Wolverine. This is the initial instance in which the character known as the Merc with a Mouth appears in a Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film, officially within its continuity.
Although it hasn’t been officially announced where Deadpool will show up next in Marvel Studios productions, Ryan Reynolds thinks it’s likely that we’ll find Wade Wilson in a secondary role instead of starring in his own project when Deadpool appears again.
What did Ryan Reynolds say about Deadpool in the MCU?
In an interview with Variety’s Actors on Actors, he expressed that Deadpool feels more like a secondary character to him rather than a lead or main one. He added that while they sometimes make Deadpool the focus due to audience demand, it only works when everything is taken away from him, making him an underdog. He admitted that he might not be able to recreate this dynamic if Deadpool returns, and suggested that if he does appear again, it would likely be in someone else’s movie, like Channing Tatum’s Gambit film, where he could play a supporting role.
Reynolds added, “I believe the character functions effectively in two key aspects. Firstly, scarcity and unpredictability. It’s been six years since the last one, and a significant portion of that time is devoted to it. You can’t let go of the wheel during development, post-production, marketing, and promotions.
After you, here’s my interpretation: “Later on, I prefer a parent-child relationship that goes beyond first names. I never want to be distant and miss out on their events. It breaks my heart when I miss one of their competitions, sports activities, or special moments. As for Deadpool, I’m unsure about its future, but Shawn [Levy] and I designed the film to have a start, a progression, and an end, offering a complete viewing experience rather than serving as a promotional tool for more sequels. To me, it’s crucial sometimes to let a movie simply be a standalone piece.
Marvel‘s Deadpool & Wolverine is now streaming on Disney+.
