As a dedicated fan who’s been hooked since the chilling first episode of “The Watcher” graced our screens last October, I can’t help but feel a tad anxious about the upcoming season. Ryan Murphy, the mastermind behind this gripping series, has shared some cryptic insights about his future projects, leaving us fans in the dark regarding season 2 of “The Watcher.
Ever since The Watcher premiered on Netflix in October 2022 and quickly received a renewal for a second season, enthusiasts of the enigmatic thriller series have been eagerly anticipating news about season 2. Well, co-creator Ryan Murphy has provided an update, but it’s rather ambiguous and not exactly encouraging. In fact, it’s quite vague and potentially disappointing.
Instead of discussing when filming for season 2 of “The Watcher” starts, or disclosing progress in the writing phase, or providing any insights into the show’s content, the busy television producer appears to have shifted his focus from the Netflix series and has been more involved with the “Monster” anthology series and the new shows he’s developing under his current contract with Disney.
Here’s the update Ryan Murphy shared in an interview with Deadline:
I have a great partner in all my work there in Ian Brennan. Ian and I love doing Monsters and that will continue. We’ll continue doing it as long as they want it and I know that they do want it, and we’re signed up to do more seasons of it. I don’t know about The Watcher. I think Ian might be doing that. I sort of feel like my plate is so full with Monsters and my six Disney shows that I’m like ‘I’m good.’
It’s hardly unexpected that out of all the shows, The Watcher is the one Murphy entrusted to his regular partners in creation. The Netflix program initially planned as a miniseries with just one season, but when it drew a larger audience than anticipated, Netflix decided to extend the series for another season. However, the details about the second season’s plot remain undisclosed.
The Watcher season 2 gets update from Ryan Murphy
Recently, Murphy has been quite occupied with the premiere of a handful of new series. These include FX’s “Grotesquerie”, ABC’s “Doctor Odyssey”, the third installment of Hulu’s “American Horror Stories”, the debut of “American Sports Story”, the eighth season of “9-1-1”, and the fifth and concluding season of “9-1-1: Lone Star”. In addition, he is preparing for the launch of three more shows: a legal drama on Hulu titled “All’s Fair”, an FX sci-fi medical series named “The Beauty”, and the first season of FX’s “American Love Story”.
Given the abundant projects of this busy creator (and with the ongoing production of both American Crime Story and American Horror Story), it’s sensible to split responsibilities with Ian Brennan. After the upcoming third season of Monster, starring Charlie Hunnam as Ed Gein, Ryan Murphy’s involvement in his other Netflix projects may be reduced. His enthusiasm for Monster remains high, but for The Watcher? Not to the same extent.
There’s no need to worry if the details about The Watcher season 2 aren’t clear yet. Murphy’s series often have longer gaps between seasons. For example, American Horror Story used to release a new season annually, but shows like American Crime Story and Monster may take two years or more between seasons. It can be disappointing for fans, but each season offers a standalone story, which is why they take time to develop well.
It seems likely that The Watcher season 2 might introduce a fresh narrative and new characters, but it’s also possible that things could stay the same. Noteworthy actor Naomi Watts, who played a key role in The Watcher, is currently engaged in another project titled All’s Fair with Kim Kardashian, Glenn Close, and other high-profile names. Filming for this Hulu legal drama starts this month, which may provide Watts the opportunity to return to The Watcher once All’s Fair production concludes. However, we’ll need a more definite update to know exactly what to anticipate from season 2.
