Rush Hour 4 Being Pitched to Studios But Has 1 Major Roadblock

As a long-time fan of the Rush Hour franchise, I must admit that the news about Rush Hour 4 is both exciting and concerning. On one hand, the prospect of another installment featuring the hilarious banter between Jackie Chan’s Lee and Chris Tucker’s Carter is tantalizing. On the other hand, the potential involvement of Brett Ratner, given the allegations against him, is a significant cause for pause.

The idea for Rush Hour 4 is being presented to film studios, but the possibility of Brett Ratner working on the project seems to be causing delays or complications.

So far, the Rush Hour series has had a total of three installments: Rush Hour (1998), Rush Hour 2 (2001), and Rush Hour 3 (2007). In all these movies, Brett Ratner served as director, and Jackie Chan played the role of Chief Inspector Lee, while Chris Tucker took on the character of Detective James Carter.

What is going on with Rush Hour 4?

Previously expressing his interest in creating Rush Hour 4, director Brett Ratner faced accusations of sexual misconduct from six women in 2017. He refuted these claims then, yet no film he’s directed has been released since the 2014 movie Hercules.

Warner Bros.’ New Line Cinema branch was responsible for distributing the three Rush Hour films. Contrary to this, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. has granted permission for the rights to make Rush Hour 4 to be sold elsewhere. Currently, Tarak Ben Ammar, under his Eagle Pictures banner, holds these rights and is actively seeking collaborative partners to produce the film if it gets made. Arthur Sarkissian is set to produce should the movie be produced by Eagle Pictures.

It seems that Ratner’s participation in a possible Rush Hour 4 is being viewed as “unfeasible” by several studios such as Paramount and Sony. Reports indicate that Lionsgate executives held discussions about collaborating with Ben Ammar on Rush Hour 4 in July.

At various points, it could appear enticing for studios like Lionsgate, which aim to expand their franchises alongside the John Wick series, or any studio eager to tap into audience nostalgia using established intellectual properties. However, producing the movie would likely involve collaborating with franchise director Brett Ratner, as per a source, who was reportedly involved in the project’s pitch as both potential director and producer. It appears that there’s some ambiguity about Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker teaming up for Rush Hour 4 again, as Brett Ratner’s involvement seems uncertain following denials from his representatives. When The Hollywood Reporter inquired about rejoining the series, Ratner claimed the question contained “glaring inaccuracies” without offering additional insights.

Currently, neither Chan nor Tucker have a confirmed agreement for another Rush Hour movie, although they’ve shown enthusiasm about it in the past.
