Currently, there’s buzz about the potential production of an Elden Ring movie, allegedly being handled by A24. An earlier post on Nexus Point News reported that Alex Garland might be tapped to direct this film. Known for his work in movies like “Civil War” from last year and critically acclaimed films such as “Ex Machina” and “Annihilation,” Garland has also penned movies like “28 Days Later.” He’s previously dabbled in video game development, contributing to titles like 2013’s DmC: Devil May Cry and 2010’s Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, both produced by Ninja Theory.
An Elden Ring movie could be in the works at A24, according to rumors
FromSoftware’s fame soared to unprecedented heights following the triumph of Elden Ring. While their previous creations like the Dark Souls series and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice garnered widespread praise, they hadn’t attracted as vast an audience as Elden Ring did. In 2022, it clinched the Game of the Year award at The Game Awards, and in 2024, Shadow of the Erdtree became the first DLC to secure a nomination for this prestigious title. A cooperative multiplayer spinoff titled Elden Ring Nightreign is slated for release later this month.
Studio A24, who has collaborated with Garland on multiple past films, is rumored to be involved in the making of this movie. Notably, they have produced two Oscar-winning films: “Moonlight” and “Everything Everywhere All At Once.” Given their track record, it seems that this collaboration could be ideal for adapting the legendary FromSoftware franchise. However, we might not get a trailer or learn much about it for quite some time yet.
As a devoted gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but notice the surge of excitement surrounding video game adaptations these days. The resounding success of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, released months prior to its greenlit film adaptation, truly reinforces this trend. Whispers about casting for Split Fiction movie have lately stirred, implying that the captivating Sydney Sweeney from Euphoria might be stepping into one of the game’s leading roles. Meanwhile, season two of The Last of Us TV series is now underway, further fueling the anticipation.
Video games present a challenging territory to translate into films. Intrinsically, video games grant players greater control and immersion than films are capable of providing. Since the announcement of the “Split Fiction” film, I’ve pondered over how it will turn out, as critics generally praise its gameplay rather than its narrative. That aspect seems to be the most difficult to replicate in a movie. As for the upcoming “Elden Ring” movie, considering Guillermo del Toro’s background in writing for video games, it may very well be the key element the film requires.
