RTS spin-off Warcraft Rumble has been scrapped as “most” of the team is gone after Microsoft layoffs

The adorable strategy game spin-off from Blizzard’s Warcraft series, known as Warcraft Rumble, will no longer receive any additional content due to a wave of layoffs at Microsoft that have significantly impacted their now enormous games publishing division. With the cancellation of Everwild, Perfect Dark, and Elder Scrolls Online developer Zenimax Online’s upcoming MMORPG also on the list, Warcraft Rumble is unfortunately facing termination as well.

Warcraft Rumble plans scrapped

Approximately a year after its PC debut, Blizzard made the tough choice to halt the creation of fresh content for the game. Although some minor improvements are planned, primarily addressing routine, ongoing in-game happenings and glitch resolutions, no additional content will be incorporated into the game.

In a message to enthusiasts, Blizzard clarified that the majority of the dedicated crew responsible for the development of the Real-Time Strategy (RTS) game have moved on.

Nine years ago, Warcraft Rumble started as a heartfelt tribute to Azeroth. It was released in 2023, incorporating valuable feedback from players worldwide and the tireless work of a dedicated team. Some members of this team are still involved in supporting Rumble or other Blizzard games, while others, unfortunately, have had to move on.

In simpler terms, Blizzard acknowledged that Rumble had difficulty meeting their high expectations for its lasting success, but the past few years of updates and modifications specifically addressing community concerns have significantly improved the spin-off.

As a devoted admirer, I’d rephrase that statement like this: “I must admit, there were indications of advancement in some areas, but regrettably, it fell short of establishing a sustainable trajectory for the game, as Blizzard clarified.

Despite Warcraft Rumble not achieving massive success on PC or mobile platforms, it offered a fresh perspective on the realm of Azeroth that was enjoyable. With the cancellation of numerous other projects and many employees, its closure is just another ripple in Microsoft’s large-scale downsizing efforts, making it the largest games publisher globally.
