Rs 2 crore: AR Rahman and PS-II makers land in legal trouble; Delhi HC orders to pay in copyright case over song credits

The historical drama film series by Mani Ratnam, known as Ponniyin Selvan, has recently regained interest following the decision made by the Delhi High Court in a copyright dispute. Music composer AR Rahman is facing charges of plagiarism for the film’s track titled Veera Raja Veera, with a potential fine of 2 crore rupees.

The tune, identically copied from the classic hymn Shiva Stuti, is reportedly sung by performers Ravi Mohan and Sobhita Dhulipala.

According to Ustad Faiyaz Wasifuddin Dagar, it is alleged that this composition was originally created by his father and uncle. The issue at hand is that if this allegation is true, then the creators of the current piece have violated copyright laws by closely replicating the rhythm, musical structure, and even beats, with only minor modifications.

The Delhi High Court has mandated both the Academy Award-winning music creator and the movie producers to pay a substantial fine of two crore rupees, along with an additional two lakh rupees in court costs, to the Dagar family.

Beyond that, the court has additionally mandated the production company to swiftly correct the credits in the song on all platforms where it’s been published, ensuring special recognition of the original composition by Ustad N. Faiyazuddin Dagar and Ustad Zahiruddin Dagar.

As a fervent admirer, I’m eagerly waiting for any updates directly from the creators or musicians themselves on this unfolding situation we’re all keenly watching.

Meanwhile, AR Rahman opened up about the persistent public attention regarding his private affairs as he went public with his divorce from his long-time partner, Saira Banu.

On his YouTube channel during a conversation with Nayandeep Rakshit, the award-winning composer expressed, “I’ve consciously chosen a life in the public eye, which means everyone and everything – from the wealthiest individuals to even deities – is subject to scrutiny. So, why should I be any different?

In terms of his profession, AR Rahman is making headlines due to his energetic music scores for the forthcoming movie “Thug Life,” featuring Kamal Haasan, Silambarasan TR, and Trisha Krishnan.
