Romero Games’ next game loses funding amid Microsoft cuts

Due to Microsoft’s extensive job cuts and financial adjustments, the gaming studio Romero Games – established by veterans John and Brenda Romero – is among those affected. Unfortunately, this means that their upcoming project has been halted, and there’s a possibility that the entire studio may cease operations.

Here’s what they said: “Last night, we found out that our publisher decided not to fund our game as well as several other unannounced projects at different studios.” The company clarified that this decision was beyond their control.

The statement additionally makes clear that progress on the game was progressing well, and there were no internal worries about its quality or the team’s capacity to complete it within a reasonable timeframe. However, despite this, Romero Games faced termination. As per an IGN report, one staff member stated on LinkedIn that the entire team is being dismissed following the loss of funding.

Romero Games has teamed up with The Initiative, but this collaboration comes amidst Microsoft’s large-scale job cuts that have resulted in some studios having projects cancelled and facing complete shutdown. This decision has also halted the development of Everwild, the upcoming title from Rare.
