As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I must say that Square Enix never ceases to amaze me with their ability to breathe new life into classic RPGs and introduce us to hidden gems from Japan. The remake of Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is no exception, promising an epic tale spanning multiple generations that I can’t wait to dive into.
For the past five years, Square Enix has been dedicated to bringing unlaunched Japanese Role-Playing Games (RPGs) to a global audience, as well as revamping some timeless classics. Live-A-Live was initially unreleased in the U.S., but its 2022 remake is considered an outstanding RPG. Similarly, Trials of Mana didn’t reach Western markets originally, but the 2020 remake ranks among Square Enix’s finest recent projects. The team behind Trials of Mana is preparing to embark on another project with Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven. Recently, Shacknews got a chance to take a look at it
In an epic saga that traverses numerous generations, Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven unfolds. The Seven Heroes, once guardians of mankind, were unjustly exiled by their ancient counterparts to another realm. Now, these heroes have resurfaced, but their extended stay in the alternate dimension has twisted them into grotesque beings seeking retribution. Overcoming and defeating the Seven Corrupted Heroes is a formidable challenge that could take several centuries to accomplish
In this game, players assume the position of the Emperor/Empress of Avalon, a role they get to decide who it is. The ongoing conflict with the Seven Heroes spans an entire lifetime for the current Emperor and their companions. The narrative emphasizes succession, as players can opt to hand over the Emperor title to various characters, each embodying distinct classes and martial arts expertise. Previous Emperors’ wisdom and skills are inherited, forming a royal lineage that strives to vanquish the Seven Heroes for good
During our PAX West stay, we could interact with just one set of Avalon’s royalty regarding gameplay. This interaction did offer a glimpse into the combat style of Romancing SaGa. The battles follow conventional turn-based mechanics but possess interesting variations. One significant difference is that enhancing character levels boosts stats, whereas skills are acquired through an alternative method. Occasionally, certain skills will display a sparkle symbol beside them
When this action occurs, it signals that continually performing this specific maneuver will result in the character learning a related technique. For instance, the archer Therese is capable of executing a Standard Bow Attack; however, if she repeatedly performs this move when a Glimmer symbol appears next to it, she can learn the Id Break skill and utilize it instantly to inflict a Confusion status. Once learned, the Id Break technique can be employed at any time thereafter. Notably, this added skill proves particularly exciting during boss battles, as the heightened tension often motivates characters to acquire new techniques to aid them in staying alive
As a gamer, I’m thrilled to see the dedication and care the development team is pouring into the remake of Romancing SaGa 2, mirroring their attention to detail they displayed with Trials of Mana. The game boasts stunning 3D models (though some Goblin movement suggests it’s still a work in progress), offering both English and Japanese voiceovers for an immersive experience, and dungeon design that’s design that’s designed for exploration, but also allowing for a sneaky to get a tactical advantage when striking enemies from behind first
As a dedicated gamer diving into Romancing SaGa 2’s remake, it’s crucial to acknowledge that the original game was no walk in the park. The developers have wisely labeled its difficulty as “Hard (Classic)” to reflect this. For those seeking a more balanced RPG experience, there will be a Normal setting, and for story enthusiasts, a Casual mode is also on the cards. However, don’t let that fool you into thinking it’ll be a breeze – there are still some challenging battles ahead
This year, Square Enix has been quite active in the RPG sector, kicking it off with Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, followed by Visions of Mana, and planning to introduce Fantasian Neo Dimension to new players. With a bustling fall release season approaching, there’s a chance Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven might evade some radars. However, at PAX West, my interest in it soared from minimal to making it high on my wish list for the coming months. It seems that no two stories will unfold identically, and this unpredictability promises a lot of enjoyment. Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is scheduled for release on October 24th for PC, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch
