It’s often claimed that rock and roll is eternal, and a band in Tokyo with a ducktail hairstyle is keeping this promise alive. Rockabilly, a blend of rock and country music, might not be as well-known among Japan’s fashion circles, but it’s hard to overlook visually. Defined by heavy leather jackets, bold twists, and slicked-back hair styled with plenty of gel, this 1950s subculture, although niche, still holds a captivating charm for the past era.
Photographer Alvin Kean Wong is introducing the rebellious, rockabilly vibe to Manhattan’s Lower East Side for a unique weekend event – the exhibition titled “Roller Zoku: Journey into Tokyo’s Rock and Roll Tribe.” Held at Café Studio, this exhibit showcases Wong’s personal dive into this subculture, providing a close-up perspective of a community living in the dreams of mid-20th-century Americana.
Wong, who hails from Singapore, was introduced to this world during his teenage years when he traveled and saw The Strangers, the legendary rockabilly band of Yoyogi Park, up close. The group’s daring challenge to traditional Asian stereotypes captivated him, transforming his camera into both a recording device and a gateway for exploring themes of identity, defiance, and camaraderie in art.
2019 saw Wong encountering John Daigo Yamashita, a significant figure in the rockabilly scene, with whom he’s been touring since then, as part of Johnny’s band. Over the past five years, Wong has documented their journey to preserve and propagate the legacy of rockabilly music. Fueled by their friendship, spirit of adventure, and unbridled enthusiasm, Roller Zoku is a testament to their tenacity, inspiring a new wave of enthusiasts who aim to breathe life into this once-fading subculture.
