Roland Emmerich: ‘Very Overbearing’ James Cameron Is Why I Dropped Out of Fantastic Voyage Remake

As a long-time gamer and film enthusiast, I’ve always been fascinated by the behind-the-scenes drama of Hollywood productions. And the ongoing saga between Roland Emmerich and James Cameron over the remake of “Fantastic Voyage” is one for the history books!

Film directors, Roland Emmerich and James Cameron, have had disagreements regarding the production of a remake of the long-planned project, Fantastic Voyage. More recently, Emmerich described Cameron as being domineering in their creative discussions.

In an interview with filmmaker Antoine Fuqua for Collider’s Directors on Directing series at Comic-Con in San Diego, Emmerich shared his past experiences collaborating with Cameron on a movie. Emmerich spoke candidly about Cameron being quite domineering before admitting that he eventually abandoned the project.

Emmerich stated that James Cameron was dominating, causing him to eventually throw in the towel. He added, “It felt as if it were his film or mine.”

1) “We were just starting out. When I wondered aloud, ‘Why is he so domineering?’, I must admit, if I can’t handle a situation myself, I lose interest immediately. It’s as plain as that. Therefore, when someone tries to communicate with me and has more influence than me, I back down.”

What is Fantastic Voyage?

In 1966, there was an intriguing science fiction film named “Fantastic Voyage.” The stellar cast included Stephen Boyd and Raquel Welch. This movie was masterfully directed by Richard Fleischer. The plot revolved around a brave submarine team whose size was reduced. Their mission was to travel inside the body of a scientist to perform essential brain surgery.

2007 marked the start of pre-production for James Cameron’s long-anticipated remake of a classic film by 20th Century Fox. Roland Emmerich was initially assigned to direct, but he departed from the project soon after. Other directors such as Shawn Levy, Paul Greengrass, and Guillermo del Toro were reportedly interested in taking up the mantle at some point.

As a lifelong movie enthusiast and someone who has spent countless hours watching films, I can say with certainty that Cameron’s planned remake of [the original film] is something I have been eagerly anticipating. However, as someone who has followed his career for many years, I must admit that I have grown accustomed to hearing about upcoming projects only to see them delayed or shelved indefinitely. It seems that Cameron’s busy schedule and the complexities of filmmaking make it difficult for him to bring his vision to life on time. That being said, I still hold out hope that one day we will finally get to see this remake come to fruition. Only time will tell if my patience will be rewarded.
