Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom Won’t Be a Tony Stark Variant

As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for the Marvel Universe, I must say the news of Robert Downey Jr.’s return as Doctor Doom has sent shockwaves through my virtual reality gaming world! Growing up, I watched Iron Man soar to fame and then saw the magic of his on-screen chemistry with the rest of the Avengers.

In a surprising move, Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Doctor Doom in the MCU took almost everyone by surprise, and during a recent conversation, it appears he won’t be playing a unique version of this iconic character.

What did Robert Downey Jr. say about returning as Doctor Doom?

During a chat on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, Downey shared the journey that eventually led him to reprise his role as one of Marvel’s most renowned villains. As Downey explains, he and Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, frequently discussed ideas, but it was during a specific talk where Feige proposed Downey playing someone other than Tony Stark again.

Downey stated, “How do we avoid moving backwards? How do we not fall short of anticipations? How can we surpass expectations even further?” He also mentioned Victor Von Doom, a character I delved into. Later on, he added, “Let’s ensure we portray Victor Von Doom accurately.”

As a die-hard gamer, I’ve got to share some insights about the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Rumors have been buzzing around like wildfire about Robert Downey Jr.’s potential return, but Victor Von Doom’s appearance seems to be putting a stop to most of these theories. Fans were quick to speculate that this version of Doom could be a variant of good old Tony Stark, but as far as I can tell from Downey’s own words, it doesn’t seem like that’s the case.

As of now, there’s no confirmed release date for Avengers: Doomsday, but Marvel Studios has announced it will be out in May 2026. Earlier, it was scheduled for May 2, 2025, however, due to various movie rewrites and the effects of industry strikes that occurred throughout 2023, it’s been postponed, joining a list of Marvel movies with delayed releases.

The movie, originally titled “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty,” has undergone a name change since last year’s dismissal of Jonathan Majors. At this point, it remains uncertain what the storyline will entail, but given its focus on Doom, one of comics’ most notorious and widely recognized villains, it’s safe to say that he will play a central role.
