What is The Alto Knights about?

The movie chronicles two infamous New York crime lords, Frank Costello (De Niro) and Vito Genovese (also De Niro), as they compete for dominance over the city’s underworld. Originally close companions, petty rivalries and a string of deceitful acts push them towards a lethal confrontation that will indelibly alter the Mafia and America.

In the movie, De Niro portrays both Vito Genovese and Frank Costello. The ensemble includes Debra Messing, Kathrine Narducci, Cosmo Jarvis, Michael Rispoli, Michael Adler, Ed Amatrudo, Joe Bacino, Anthony J. Gallo, Wallace Langham, Louis Mustillo, Frank Piccirillo, Matt Servitto, and Robert Uricola as part of the cast (“Raging Bull”).

In writing the screenplay for the film, it was Nicholas Pileggi who took on that task. The role of producers, however, was taken up by Irwin Winkler, Jason Sosnoff, Levinson, Charles Winkler, and David Winkler. Mike Drake, on the other hand, served as an executive producer.

In 1982, Levinson started his journey as a film director with “Diner.” Subsequently, he directed films like “The Natural” (1984), “Young Sherlock Holmes” (1985), “Good Morning, Vietnam” (1987), “Rain Man” (1999), “Bugsy” (1991), “Wag the Dog” (1997), “Bandits” (2001), “Man of the Year” (2006), and most recently, “Rock the Kasbah” (2015), among other projects.

In addition, Pileggi is recognized for authoring the 1985 non-fiction work titled Wiseguy: Life in a Mafia Family. This book served as the inspiration for Martin Scorsese’s film Goodfellas, which was jointly scripted by Pileggi and Scorsese. The movie debuted in 1990, featuring Robert De Niro as James “Jimmy” Conway, Ray Liotta portraying Henry Hill, and Joe Pesci in the role of Tommy DeVito.

In addition to collaborating on the script for Casino (adapted from a real-life book), which debuted in 1995, Pileggi also acted as an executive producer for The Irishman in 2019. Robert De Niro featured in both movies, while Martin Scorsese directed them both.

In U.S. theaters on March 21, 2025, the film “Alto Knights” will make its debut, courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures.
