As a retro gaming enthusiast who grew up in the 80s, I am beyond excited about the upcoming DLC for River City Girls 2! The return of Billy and Jimmy Lee from Double Dragon is a nostalgic blast from the past that takes me straight back to my arcade days. And having Arin Hanson and Dan Avidan lend their voices to these iconic characters just seals the deal.
Despite River City Girls 2 being launched in 2022, its developers recently unveiled additional content, which delves deep into the authentic history of beat ’em up genre.
This game, published by Arc System, is titled “Misako and Kyoko’s Fight Against the Villains.” It’s a follow-up from the previous game, featuring these school girls battling against not only the antagonists from the first installment but also some Yakuza muscle. The gameplay is a fast-paced, action-packed “beat ’em up,” sporting an eye-catching, anime-inspired, pixelated aesthetic. Key elements include acrobatic combos, elemental attacks, and a thrilling yet enjoyable overall experience.
New song, story and fighters
On November 12, the upcoming DLC release not only introduces fresh material to the game, but also welcomes back some of the original beat ’em up legends!
With a fresh dojo master and an entirely revamped melody and narrative, this DLC also includes Billy and Jimmy Lee from Double Dragon as playable characters. The voices of Billy and Jimmy, along with the newly introduced song, are provided by GameGrump’s Arin Hanson and Dan Avidan.
The Double Dragon series, originating from arcade games in the 80s, has since been available on various platforms, including TV adaptations. Its influence on fighting games is significant and enduring. Remarkably, even with modern releases of Double Dragon games, it’s gratifying to observe references to it within other titles of the same genre.
