Rikishi Reflects on Jey Uso’s WWE Intercontinental Title Loss

As a long-time WWE fan with a deep appreciation for the legacy of the Anoa’i family, I can’t help but share my thoughts on Jey Uso’s Intercontinental title loss. Having followed the careers of Rikishi and his son Jey for years, it’s clear that the “Yeet Man” character has struck a chord with fans, generating a wave of excitement and merchandise sales like none other in recent memory.

Legendary WWE Hall of Famer Rikishi has shared his thoughts on his son, Jey Uso, losing the Intercontinental Championship from the September 23rd episode of WWE RAW. In this week’s show, Jey successfully defended his singles title in WWE for the first time in 14 years when he defeated Bron Breakker.

Jey’s time as champion didn’t last long. He only defended the title once against Xavier Woods on RAW before losing it to Breakker last week. In an unexpected twist, The Bloodline got involved in the match, causing him to lose the title. Although his reign was short, fans still cheered for Jey’s achievement. Even WWE Hall of Famer Rikishi shared his opinion that the championship reign ended prematurely.

Rikishi on Jey Uso’s loss: ‘I think it was too soon’

As a diehard wrestling fan, I’m sharing my thoughts on Jey Uso’s Intercontinental title reign that recently came to an end, as discussed by Rikishi on his podcast “Off the Top”. Rikishi, himself a legendary figure in the world of wrestling, felt that Jey’s title loss happened a bit too swiftly. He emphasized the tremendous popularity Jey had gained with his unique “Yeet Man” character, which had sparked significant fan interest and even led to impressive sales of merchandise like custom shirts for each city he visited.

As a dedicated fan, I’d rephrase that statement like this: “As a former WWE Hall of Famer, I feel it was premature. From a business standpoint, Jey had finally received his due recognition with the title he truly deserved. Now, we’re focusing on this young talent. His character, Yeet man, is skyrocketing in popularity. He’s arguably selling the most sought-after merchandise, if not rivaling OTC, and might even surpass it.

Recognizing Jey Uso’s “Yeet man” character, Rikishi explained the potential for income through WWE merchandise. He stated, “He sells merchandise in every city he visits…from a promotional perspective, you can only increase and improve sales if you capitalize on this young talent. I’m not suggesting this because he’s my son…I’m speaking as a promoter now, because at the core of it all, this is what it boils down to. It’s about profits. It’s about revenue.

Instead of pursuing a rematch as fans anticipated, he’s shifted his focus towards the emerging Bloodline. Lately, he has mended fences with Jimmy Uso and Roman Reigns during a pre-recorded WWE SmackDown event. In the upcoming WWE Crown Jewel 2024, the original trio of the Bloodline will square off against Solo Sikoa’s fresh Bloodline alliance.
