Ridley Scott is opening up about whether or not he’ll ever do another Alien movie.
Back in 1979, I, as a gamer, brought the iconic alien to life with the movie Alien. Though there were some sequels following suit, it wasn’t until 2012 that I returned to the director’s chair for Prometheus, which was then succeeded by Alien: Covenant in 2017. I also took on a producing role for Alien: Romulus in 2024 and have been involved as an executive producer for the upcoming Alien: Earth television series.
In an interview with ScreenRant, Scott shared insights about the franchise’s past and whether he may participate in future related projects.
What did Ridley Scott say about the Alien franchise?
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve got to say, the spark seemed to fade from that franchise post-part 4. Don’t get me wrong, my take is that both mine and Jim’s installments were pretty solid, but honestly, the rest didn’t quite measure up. It left me thinking, “Man, this is it? This legendary franchise should be on par with iconic series like Star Trek or Star Wars, but it seems to have reached its end.” I mean, the first one by George was truly groundbreaking – just as influential as 2001. In terms of shaping film language and setting new standards, it was a game-changer, much like how George’s Star Wars paved the way for me to be offered Alien, only a year later.
Years later on, I declared, ‘I’m bringing this back,’ and started writing Prometheus anew – from the ground up. Damon Lindelof and I collaborated on its creation, and it was both fresh and exciting. The audience yearned for more. I stated, ‘It needs to take off.’ It wasn’t attracting interest, so I returned to create Alien: Covenant, and it succeeded as well.
Scott added, “Where it’s going now, I think I’ve done enough, and I just hope it goes further.”
Beyond the upcoming movie Alien: Earth, another sequel to Alien: Romulus is currently being worked on, but specifics about it are still kept secret for now. On a different note, Ridley Scott’s next project is The Dog Stars featuring Jacob Elordi, scheduled to hit theatres in March 2026.
