Rian Johnson, director of The Last Jedi, spoke about a possible new Star Wars trilogy he might create for Lucasfilm in the future.
Previously, Rian Johnson helmed Star Wars: The Last Jedi, a film released by Lucasfilm in 2017. Approximately a month before this movie hit theaters, it was disclosed that Johnson would also pen a fresh trilogy for the Star Wars series, distinct from the primary narrative thread seen in earlier installments of the franchise.
Initially, Johnson was intended to lead the first film in the trilogy. Yet, after the debut of The Last Jedi and the ensuing online discussions and uproar, he opted to create 2019’s Knives Out and 2022’s Glass Onion instead. Currently, he’s working on a third Knives Out movie titled Wake Up Dead Man, set to premiere on Netflix later in the year.
Since the Star Wars trilogy was first announced several years ago and there hasn’t been much recent information regarding the project, some fans have become curious to know whether Rian Johnson’s future Star Wars projects are still planned.
What did Rian Johnson say about his Star Wars trilogy?
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Johnson stated that “there wasn’t much progress” or “not a lot came out of” the discussions regarding the trilogy.
In simple terms, “Lucasfilm and I had a fantastic collaboration, and they suggested continuing our partnership. I agreed enthusiastically and often shared ideas with Kathy. Essentially, Knives Out came about. After that, I was fully occupied creating murder mysteries. If the chance arises in the future to contribute more to Star Wars or any other project, I would be delighted. For now, I’m focusing on my own projects and am quite content.
Though it seems there won’t be any updates soon about Rian Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy, enthusiasts of his creations can look forward to the release of “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery” on December 12, 2025.
