As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must admit that Boss Team Games has truly outdone themselves with RetroRealms. This game is a delightful fusion of two of my favorite horror properties – Ash vs Evil Dead and Halloween – and it’s executed so seamlessly that I can’t help but feel like I’ve stumbled upon a long-lost relative in the gaming world.
Boss Team Games is providing an unexpected yet delightful surprise with their 2D action platformers, elegantly pixeled and inspired by horror franchises. The game RetroRealms brilliantly combines elements from Ash vs Evil Dead (the popular TV series) and Halloween, offering two distinct campaigns that can be seamlessly interchanged. Characters from both worlds can be utilized freely, allowing Michael Myers to scare Deadites or letting the Deadites return the favor by tormenting Michael Myers. It’s a refreshing blend that showcases a genuine affection for the original content.
The gameplay is quite simple yet engaging. Each character possesses a primary melee attack, useful for attacking enemies and building up power for a stronger strike, as well as a unique ranged attack that needs ammunition to be activated. Puzzle-solving also plays a role, with hidden collectibles strategically positioned in challenging locations, often requiring the realm ability to access. This ability allows you to tap into a meter and enter the Nightmare Realm – an alternate level version with subtle differences. The game provides an enjoyable experience that is customized based on the character you choose.
Each game offers its unique storyline, and it’s fascinating to witness iconic locations reimagined within the gameplay. However, these aren’t straightforward remakes; instead, they weave a new narrative where a powerful antagonist is shaping the world, leading to fresh, original content. Characters are skillfully crafted – Michael Myers remains silent, contrasting Ash Williams who chatters in cutscenes. The creators seem to have held the source material in high regard, and while there might be some challenging level layouts at times, they’re not frequent enough to slow down the gameplay experience significantly.
The game really shines in its boss encounters. These are when strategy really comes into play as you’ll have to conserve health by dodging attacks and learning the boss’ patterns. Getting through the end of one of the in-game worlds is quite satisfying, and what’s cool is that you’ll have to alter your approach depending on what character you are playing. Some fights are naturally easier with some of the characters’ abilities, while others will test your mettle.
At the moment, this game boasts four unique characters: Myers, Ash, Laurie Strode, and Kelly Maxwell. Each one offers an engaging playstyle, and subtle variations can significantly alter your approach at every stage. For instance, Laurie can perform a double jump, opening up fresh possibilities, whereas Ash can build up his melee attack for a powerful shotgun explosion. This diversity makes the game remarkably replayable – each character has their distinct set of trophies – and it’s always enjoyable to explore new experiences with them.
Additionally, you’ll find a variety of bonuses in store. The items you gather within the game can be exchanged for intriguing museum artifacts, like a 3D model of Ash’s car, which are detailed replicas of some famous Evil Dead and Halloween props. Furthermore, there are stunning dioramas that can be unlocked, many of which tie into the game’s theme of otherworldly realms. Lastly, a highlight is the functional VCR that lets you watch exclusive behind-the-scenes videos of the developers discussing horror and the creation of the game.
RetroRealms Review: Final Verdict
Developer WayForward has once again crafted an enchanting and tough platformer, but this time with a chilling horror motif. Titled RetroRealms, it’s a delight for enthusiasts of Evil Dead and Halloween, as these games are enjoyable to play repeatedly and even more so when you blend the scenarios. Imagine Laurie Strode battling Deadites! What fun! This type of scary entertainment is exclusive to gaming, and I wholeheartedly approve.
SCORE: 8.5/10
According to ComingSoon’s review guidelines, a score of 8 signifies “Great.” Although there are a handful of minor flaws, this rating indicates that the artwork achieves its purpose effectively and leaves a lasting impression.
