In the past, Capcom has dabbled significantly in various aspects of the Resident Evil series. We’ve witnessed the online cooperative Outbreak games, the rail-shooter Survivor games, and the multiplayer spin-offs Resistance and Re:Verse. As a tribute to the series’ 30th anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem is a horror game that harks back to basics, featuring both first and third-person perspectives. However, this wasn’t always the case.
Yes, Resident Evil Requiem was open-world
In a recent developer’s update, Koshi Nakanishi, director of Resident Evil Requiem, unveiled an early concept of the game. This version of the game featured an open world setting, multiple playable characters, and intense action-oriented combat (potentially hinting at a spiritual successor to Resident Evil 6).
In the course of creating new games, Capcom opted to tone down the high-action, multi-character storyline that had previously caused controversy and instead focused on revisiting the terrifying elements that the series is known for.
During the initial stages of development, various systems were being extensively tested by our team, as producer Masachika Kawata stated. You may have come across whispers about this, Nakanishi added. Concepts such as a Resident Evil game in an online setting or an open-world Resident Evil were some ideas we delved into experimentally.

As a gamer, I found myself in a situation where, despite the intriguing ideas we had, the final product we developed didn’t quite resonate with fans or live up to their expectations. So, we took a step back, reevaluated our approach, and eventually created Resident Evil: Requiem – a game that stayed true to the essence of the Resi franchise.
In “Resident Evil Requiem,” players are returning to Raccoon City. As mentioned by Kawata, the team has successfully crammed a great deal into this game. It’s likely that there will be sequences with intense action elements, as even the most frightening installments in the series have those. However, it assures us that this isn’t a rehash of the chaos from Resident Evil 6; instead, it promises to deliver a genuine Resident Evil experience.
Next year, on February 27, 2026, Resident Evil Requiem will be available for purchase on Xbox Series X and S, PlayStation 5, and PC. Unfortunately, there are currently no plans to release a version for Nintendo Switch 2 at this point in time.
