Report: HBO’s Velma Canceled on MAX After 2 Seasons

As a lifelong Scooby-Doo fan who grew up watching the original cartoons and even had a Mystery Machine toy, I must admit that my feelings about the cancellation of “Velma” are a bit of a mixed bag. On one hand, it’s disappointing to see the series end so abruptly, especially when there were still unresolved plotlines and character arcs. On the other hand, the reimagining of the classic characters didn’t quite resonate with me as I would have hoped.

As a dedicated fan and gamer, I’m sad to share that Mindy Kaling’s refreshing take on Velma in our beloved Scooby-Doo universe won’t be continuing for Season 3. In a post that’s since been taken down from Instagram, background artist Davey Cummings announced the show’s cancellation shortly after its Halloween special aired on MAX. This marks the conclusion of an engaging animated series that brought a unique twist to the cherished characters we all grew up with.

MAX has reportedly canceled Mindy Kaling-led Velma series

According to Comicbook.com, Davey Cummings (an artist working behind-the-scenes) shared on Instagram (before deleting the post), that Mindy Kaling’s animated Velma series has been canceled. The show, spearheaded by Kaling, will not proceed after its Halloween special release.

It’s been confirmed that there won’t be a third season of Velma, which debuted on Max in 2023 after airing for two successful seasons, ending with the Halloween special titled “This Halloween Needs To Be More Special.” At present, neither Warner Bros. nor Max have made an official announcement about the show’s cancellation.

In a fresh take on the beloved Scooby-Doo gang, the TV series called “Velma” stirred up debates because it significantly altered the familiar characters. Surprisingly, Scooby-Doo was absent, and instead, new narratives and relationships were created. The show garnered a mix of reactions, with many viewers criticizing its humor and portrayal of certain stereotypes. Despite facing criticism, Velma still aired for two seasons and a concluding special before it was reportedly cancelled.

In the Halloween special, various story threads were left hanging, such as what happened to Fred following the influence of the spellbook on him and the intricate dynamics between Velma and the other characters. It seems that this Halloween special, where Velma fought against an army of the undead, could potentially be the end of the series.

Even though Velma has made her decision, fans of the Scooby-Doo universe can eagerly anticipate a fresh series called Go-Go Mystery Machine. This new installment focuses on Shaggy and Scooby, as they set off on exciting journeys in Japan. The upcoming project is the fifteenth series for this long-lasting franchise, keeping the tradition of Mystery Incorporated alive for future viewers to enjoy.
