Renee and Andrew MacRae: Who Killed Them & Where Is the Killer Now?

As a seasoned gamer who has navigated countless virtual worlds and solved numerous mysteries, I must say that the story of Renee and Andrew MacRae is one that leaves an indelible mark. This real-life mystery is as captivating as any game’s questline, filled with twists, turns, and a tragic ending that remains shrouded in enigma.

Last year, BBC aired a two-part documentary series titled “The Vanishing: The MacRae Case” which unfolds the chilling tale of one of Scotland’s most baffling unsolved missing persons cases from the past. The whereabouts of Renee and her three-year-old son, Andrew, remain unknown since their disappearance in 1976.

Back in 1976, on November 12th, I came across a heart-wrenching tale while watching a docuseries: Renee’s BMW was discovered ablaze on the A9 roadway near Dalmagarry. This tragic event happened as she and her two children embarked on a journey from their home in Inverness with her companion, Andrew. Fast-forward to 2022, an 80-year-old man named William MacDowell was found guilty of the double murder that took place four decades ago. His arrest came after a lengthy investigation in September 2019. Despite this conviction, the remains of Renee and Andrew have yet to be discovered. The mystery surrounding their fate continues to haunt us.

Where is Renee & Andrew MacRae’s killer William MacDowell now?

According to BBC reports, William MacDowell, who was found guilty of murdering Renee and Andrew MacRae, passed away in February 2023 at the age of 81, just under five months after his conviction. He received a life sentence with a minimum of 30 years. Prior to his death, MacDowell was serving time at HMP Glenochil in Alloa. The police confirmed that he died at Forth Valley Royal Hospital.

As a gamer delving into the intriguing world of real-life dramas, I uncovered an engrossing tale involving Renee, Gordon MacRae, and Andrew – names that would later become entwined in a web of secrets and tragedy. You see, I discovered that MacDowell, who was working as a company secretary at a construction firm owned by Renee’s estranged husband, Gordon, had been having an affair with Renee since 1972. Andrew, their secret love child, was born just a year after the affair began.

As reported by BBC, MacDowell lost his position due to an affair becoming public knowledge. Additionally, it was uncovered that he had replaced the car’s boot floor belonging to the company, and he stubbornly kept the vehicle until he had thoroughly cleaned it.

The unseen location where Renee and Andrew’s murderer, William MacDowell, hid their bodies remains unknown, keeping the circumstances surrounding their vanishing unexplained.
