Remnant 2: The Dark Horizon DLC sends the sequel off with a bang

As a seasoned gamer with countless hours spent battling formidable foes across various dimensions, I can confidently say that Remnant: From the Ashes’ The Dark Horizon DLC has truly outdone itself. This final installment is a fitting farewell to a game that has captured my imagination and tested my skills.

Gunfire Games consistently added engaging DLC expansions for the original Remnant game and have continued this trend throughout Remnant 2. Each DLC pack significantly enhances the game by introducing fresh content such as new bosses, locations, weapons, gear, and additional items for players to explore and collect. Consequently, it’s no wonder that The Dark Horizon serves as a fitting finale for Remnant 2.

In the concluding DLC for Remnant 2 titled “The Dark Horizon,” players revisit N’Erud to delve deeper into its enigmas, possibly finding solutions to age-old puzzles surrounding this peculiar destination. Similar to the other DLCs, “The Dark Horizon” transports players to a fresh biome nestled within one of the base game’s locales. In this instance, the new biome is an agricultural region that bears a striking resemblance to modified versions of Half-Life’s Combine forces as alien entities.

In contrast to other new additions in Remnant games, this fresh biome stands out due to its unique vertical structure. While earlier levels might have you climbing stairs and ramps, this particular region of N’Erud introduces gliders for traversal. These gliders allow players to soar over chasms, skim across turbulent seas to remote cliffs, or navigate through hidden caverns by utilizing updrafts, providing access to previously inaccessible areas.

The glider serves as an interesting twist in the gameplay, although it can be a bit awkward to handle. There are also some issues with its timing that affect its performance. The glider becomes available at specific locations near certain ledges, and once one player picks up one, the next player must wait for another to appear. Consequently, one player might manage to cross the chasm and proceed through tunnels or engage in a boss fight, while others are left waiting for the glider to respawn.

Initially, the tricky nature of setting up the glider may seem daunting, but once you’ve mastered it, the agricultural region of N’Erud becomes an exciting discovery waiting to be unwrapped. It’s a complex network of ledges, tunnels, ravines, and hidden spots that invite exploration. It can be confusing trying to navigate the varying heights as you figure out the best route, but that’s just part of the adventure’s charm.

As a gamer, I jump right into the latest DLC just like before, but this time there’s a twist! With a unique campaign roll, I gain access to an entirely new world filled with dungeons, collectibles, and bosses exclusively from the fresh content. After completing the campaign or giving it another spin, these elements are added to the game’s random pool, so my next playthrough could offer something brand-new, even from the base game!

Similar to past DLCs, The Dark Horizon introduces a fresh character type for players – the Warden. This character shares some resemblance with the Handler but comes with an indestructible drone. You can deploy this drone yourself or assign it to an ally, who will benefit from its continuous shield replenishment, healing, increased fire rate boost, and enemy damage. Essentially, it’s a handy new character type that functions as a reliable support class, but I wish the drone’s persistent humming sound could be reduced a bit for a more peaceful gaming experience.

Even those who haven’t purchased the premium DLC can still enjoy a feast when The Dark Horizon is released, because all players will receive a free update simultaneously with the DLC. This update boasts an impressive content drop that includes a Boss Rush mode, the Prism system, and an item search filter. It’s a substantial addition that perfectly completes the overall package.

In Boss Rush, there’s a resemblance to Remnant: From the Ashes’ Survival Mode because you encounter several bosses consecutively. However, these games differ significantly beyond that point. Unlike in other modes, in Boss Rush, you bring your custom-built character into the challenge to see how they fare (or fail). Throughout your journey, you’ll receive temporary benefits such as enhanced health regeneration, a Vampire Survivors-esque orb orbiting around you dealing damage, and various other beneficial perks. This element adds an exciting rogue-lite touch to the gameplay experience.

As a gamer, I find this new mode feels like the next logical step from Survival Mode. The thrill lies in bringing my crafted setup into the fray, squaring off against a rotating cast of formidable bosses, rather than starting fresh and building a character from scratch as with traditional roguelikes.

It’s also beneficial to understand how much time you can dedicate for a Boss Rush gaming session. This mode offers three distinct structures: a trio of bosses, half a dozen bosses, or more than a handful (choosing the latter two will additionally require confronting Annihilation). Furthermore, there’s an option to select difficulty levels ranging from Survivor to Nightmare.

As a devoted player, I can’t help but appreciate the thoughtful design of Gunfire Games in crafting an XP-abundant mode that caters to our min-maxing desires. This ingenious new gameplay mode, affectionately known as Boss Rush, is a veritable goldmine for XP, ensuring a steady stream of rewards even if I meet my demise at the gates. What’s more, encounters with unique bosses in this mode could potentially reward me with exclusive goodies that I might not have encountered in Adventure Mode. The primary reason behind Boss Rush being an XP-rich environment is to facilitate the refinement of our builds using Gunfire Games’ innovative Prism system, providing us with yet another avenue for perfecting our gaming strategies.

In the latest update, Fragments have undergone significant changes, and The Prism offers a fresh approach for users to engage with them. Previously, you could pick three active Fragments; however, now there’s an extra Prism added to your collection, accommodating five additional Fragment slots.

Each time your Fragment advances, you’ll pick from three randomly selected options, and once five are secured, you’ll enhance them. Reach the maximum capacity on the Prism to obtain a potent Legendary Fragment. Additionally, certain Fragments can be merged into a double Fragment that provides dual advantages. If fortune favors you, you might find a Prism with over a dozen powerful active Fragments. You could potentially possess as many as seven of these Prisms, opening up immense possibilities for customization.

Gunfire Games’ team has perfectly executed the trilogy of DLC releases, with this final one promising endless hours of gameplay. Even if you breeze through the new N’Erud region swiftly, there’s a strong incentive for repeat play due to the Boss Rush mode and the allure of crafting the ideal Prism. The Dark Horizon DLC, along with its free update, serves as a fitting farewell to Remnant 2. (Informal)
