As a long-time fan of Shannen Doherty and the iconic television show “Charmed,” I can’t help but feel a deep sense of sadness and appreciation upon learning of her passing. Having grown up with the show, I remember Doherty most fondly as Prue Halliwell, the oldest and strongest of The Charmed Ones. Her portrayal of this complex and powerful character resonated deeply with me, especially as the oldest of two sisters myself.
On July 13, 2024, we sadly bid farewell to Shannen Doherty, a beloved actress at the age of 53. After a decade-long battle with cancer, she passed away according to PEOPLE’s report. Known for her roles in “Beverly Hills 90210,” “Heathers,” and many other projects, Doherty left an indelible mark on entertainment. For me, as one of her devoted fans, I will always cherish her time on “Charmed.”
Growing up, the Charmed Ones’ fantasy series was a significant part of my life, and I deeply connected with Prue Halliwell, portrayed by that actress. Being the eldest of two sisters myself, I found common ground with her character in various ways. Prue stood out among her sisters Piper and Phoebe for her extraordinary powers – telekinesis and astral projection, making her the most powerful witch in the family. My childhood memories are filled with the adventures of these enchanting sisters, and Prue will always hold a special place in my heart as my favorite character.
As someone who grew up watching Charmed, I can’t help but be in awe of Prue Halliwell, played by the brilliant Shannen Doherty. Prue was more than just a character on the show; she was a force to be reckoned with, full of strength and passion. Her fierce love for her sisters and commitment to protecting the innocent were qualities that resonated deeply with me.
Which Prue is it Anyway?

Acting as a dual character on a TV show or film is an intricate task for an actor, involving considerable mental effort to distinguish between the two personas. Doherty masterfully accomplished this in the initial season episode, demonstrating her expertise and skill in portraying multiple characters. Unsurprisingly, she delivered an impeccable performance given her previous experience.
Phoebe intuits that Prue met a tragic end by being stabbed to death. In response, Prue casts a spell resulting in the creation of two identical copies of herself. Impressively, Doherty handled three distinct versions of her character during this episode’s approximately 40-minute run time. She truly excelled.
Prue turns into a man
Season 2 episode 5, “She’s a Man, Baby, a Man!”
When the sisters encounter a succubus as their most recent foe, Prue transforms into a man to help the team locate and put a stop to her. This was unexpected when they performed the spell. Initially ashamed, Prue ponders over her appearance, remarking, “I look ridiculous. I’m wearing clothes from my ex-boyfriends’ closets, I have unwanted hair in various places, and I sport anatomical features distinctly male.” Essentially, she’s sporting a man’s private parts.
As someone who has spent years immersed in the world of acting and performance, I can honestly say that I’ve seen some truly hilarious moments on set. And let me tell you, the scene featuring Doherty’s performance in that recent episode was nothing short of a riot.
Everything about Ms. Hellfire
Season 2 episode 9, “Ms. Hellfire”
An intriguing episode from the show that I particularly enjoy, especially concerning Prue, is titled “Ms. Hellfire.” In this installment, the sisters unwittingly ended the life of a human assassin, assuming she was a demon. To uncover the truth and identify her employer, Prue adopts a disguise as Ms. Hellfire. The episode’s narrative is captivating, with Barbas, one of the most remarkable demons in the series, orchestrating the supernatural events.
In this episode, Prue’s boldness really shines through, adding an extra layer to her already formidable character. The scene is not only thrilling but also romantic, making it even more captivating. And let’s not forget the heroic moment when she saves her sister Phoebe – a testament to Prue’s selflessness and strength. This episode beautifully highlights Doherty’s acting skills by showcasing the diverse aspects of Prue’s personality. A real treat for fans!
Prue becomes an empath
Season 3 episode 6, “Primrose Empath”
When Prue unwittingly assumes the role of an empath, she remains oblivious to the potential repercussions of being unable to regulate others’ emotions. The intensity of these feelings threatens to shatter her if she fails to master this newfound ability. A particularly heart-wrenching moment unfolds as Prue crumbles under the weight of these emotions, and Doherty delivers a captivating performance during this scene. Truly remarkable.
Later on, Prue demonstrates her tough and impressive fighting skills through a series of kickboxing moves as she battles against the demon. I’m not quite sure how to describe it, but trust me, it’s an awesome sight to behold. The final episode
Season 3 episode 22, “All Hell Breaks Loose”
Despite being heart-wrenching due to Prue’s unfortunate demise caused by Doherty’s departure from the show, this “Charmed” episode stands out as one of the best. The plot was masterfully crafted and filled with numerous compelling aspects that contributed to its success. One notable element was Doherty’s powerful portrayal, particularly during the scene where Piper was injured and she desperately tried to get her to the hospital. Frustrated by the crowd, Prue used her magic on them to clear a path.
In this episode, we were deeply moved and it wasn’t easy for fans to watch. The events that unfolded off-camera were truly unexpected. However, there’s one undeniable truth: Doherty and Prue Halliwell were the soul of the show. Although the series managed to thrive beyond the third season, I, as a fan, am elated about it. Nevertheless, there’s an indescribable allure and enchantment about the first three seasons that Doherty significantly contributed to.
