As a die-hard fan of “The Walking Dead” universe, I’ve been on this zombie apocalypse rollercoaster for more years than I care to remember. From the heart-wrenching moments to the nail-biting cliffhangers, it’s been an unforgettable journey.
The hit post-apocalyptic TV series from AMC, The Walking Dead, serves as the main tale that has led to numerous offshoots. Each series takes place in the same world, with only three exceptions featuring different characters across various parts of the United States. As for the release order, the first spinoff came out in July 2023, followed by two more subsequent ones.
The Walking Dead (2010-2022)
The TV series “The Walking Dead” debuted on Halloween night 2010, captivating viewers with the tale of Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) from its very first episode. Many viewers were immediately hooked and continued to follow the series without hesitation. Fast forward to 2022, and the series concluded on November 20th, marking the end of a journey that fans had been part of for twelve years. The finale was both joyful and sad as the audience bid farewell to a beloved show they had invested in for over a decade. Over its eleven seasons, “The Walking Dead” experienced its fair share of highs and lows, much like any long-running program. However, overall, it presented an exceptional narrative set within an undead apocalypse that focused primarily on the struggles of survivors rather than just the zombies themselves.
Fear the Walking Dead (2015-2023)
2013 saw AMC revealing plans for a spin-off to “The Walking Dead,” titled “Fear the Walking Dead.” On August 23rd, 2015, the premiere episode was broadcasted. The narrative initially unfolded in Los Angeles during the early stages of the zombie apocalypse. Characters in the series struggled to understand and adapt to a world dominated by the undead as they tried to make sense of the unfolding chaos. Over eight seasons, it ran until November 19th, 2023, with the final episode concluding the journeys of the surviving characters. The first four seasons were considered the show’s strongest, and the finale provided a satisfying resolution for the survivors’ stories.
The Walking Dead: World Beyond (2020-2021)
The second offshoot of “The Walking Dead” was titled “The Walking Dead: World Beyond“, a two-season coming-of-age limited series. Set over 10 episodes per season, it focused on a group of adolescents who had spent their entire lives confined within walls since the initial outbreak, which occurred when they were very young. In the first season, the teenagers ventured outside the walls to discover a world unlike any they could have imagined. The second season introduced us to the CRM (Civil Republic Military), a powerful and expansive organization hinted at in other series.
Tales of the Walking Dead (2022-present)
The Walking Dead: Tales of the Dead stands out as it follows an episodic anthology structure, meaning each of its six episodes tells a fresh, standalone story with distinct characters, settings across the U.S., and varying timelines post-outbreak. Notably, this series unveiled Alpha’s (Samantha Morton) backstory, offering new insights into her character that significantly differ from what was initially known about her in the main series. In general, it presented an innovative approach and the majority of episodes were quite engaging.
The Walking Dead: Dead City (2023-present)
In 2023, the spinoff show titled “The Walking Dead: Dead City” made its debut, marking it as the first direct sequel from the original series. This new installment broadened the universe’s scope by being set in Manhattan and its vicinity, while also delving deeper into the tales of Maggie (portrayed by Lauren Cohan) and Negan (played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan). Notably, these two characters were once adversaries and principal figures in “The Walking Dead”. The reception to this series has been exceptionally favorable. It’s been confirmed that a second season of “Dead City” will air in 2025.
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon (2023-present)
In 2023, the second spin-off titled “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon” made its debut, expanding the universe of TWDU even further. The first season finds our main character, portrayed by Norman Reedus, embarking on an adventure overseas to France – a stark contrast to the forest-bound setting of the original series. This new series follows Daryl as he navigates a foreign world, encountering new faces, allies, and adversaries in his quest to return home. The show has been picked up for not one but two more seasons, with season 2, titled “The Book of Carol” featuring Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride) joining the cast. This installment is set to premiere on September 29, 2024. The third and potentially fourth seasons will be filmed in Spain, with production starting in August 2024.
The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live (2024)
The much-anticipated meeting between Rick and Michonne (Danai Gurira) happened in the series The Walking Dead: World Beyond, which delved into their separate adventures during their time apart through flashbacks. This spinoff also showcased the highly anticipated reunion that fans had been yearning for. Once reunited, they confronted the CRM, the group to which Rick was traded following his departure from the main series in season 9. He was discovered injured on a riverbank by Jadis/Anne (Pollyanna McIntosh), who then used him as a bargaining chip for her own advantage. The narrative was a captivating tale of resilience, fundamentally revolving around an epic romance.
The Head Content Manager of The Walking Dead Universe, Scott M. Gimple, has frequently hinted at potential additional spin-offs within the TWD universe. At this moment, no further announcements have been made, yet eager fans anxiously anticipate any news.
