Rebus season 1 ending explained: Does Michael kill Cafferty?

As a seasoned gamer of life, having navigated through countless twists and turns in various narratives, I must admit that Rebus Season 1 has managed to captivate me like none other. The younger, grittier Rebus was a refreshing change, and the cliffhanger ending has left me yearning for more.

Season 1 of “Rebus” has just been released, and the finale leaves us wanting more. The suspenseful ending raises numerous questions, yet watching this grittier and younger version of Rebus has been quite engaging.

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for the Rebus season 1 finale

Through each previous episode, we witnessed various plotlines gradually intertwining. The climax, or finale, brought these threads together in a dramatic fashion as Rebus successfully rescued most of his crew from the shed. Only he and Michael were left behind, with Michael growing intrigued about why his brother intended to kill the restrained Cafferty.

In this scene, Rebus narrates the events surrounding George. Michael suggests that George was indeed corrupt, and it seems as though everyone in this police precinct has their share of corruption. Although Siobhan strives to avoid such actions, she’s been involved in some shady activities. This episode showcases her willingness to hide certain illicit activities happening around her.

Michael doesn’t kill Cafferty in the Rebus season 1 finale

In simpler terms, Rebus successfully persuades Michael to leave things be. There’s little chance Cafferty will speak up, yet it suggests Michael might be in danger on Cafferty’s list. However, Rebus assures he’ll take care of it.

When a gunshot echoes, Cafferty falls unconsciously, but it’s not the bullet that strikes him; instead, he’s experiencing a heart attack. Despite having the opportunity to let Cafferty perish, Rebus chooses not to. Siobhan and Gill enter the scene to find Rebus actively attempting to keep the man alive.

It seems there were two separate pieces of information at play here: First, Siobhan deduced the locations of Rebus and Cafferty from details that Rebus shared with her. Second, they learned about Cafferty’s predicament because Rhona contacted Gill to report an ongoing situation. In simpler terms, Siobhan found out where Rebus and Cafferty were through information provided by Rebus, and they knew Cafferty was in trouble due to a call from Rhona.

Indeed, Gill isn’t taking Rebus’s tale at face value right now. The matter hasn’t been resolved yet, but there are other urgent matters demanding attention at present.

Rebus season 1 ending explained: Does Michael kill Cafferty?

Cafferty isn’t the one Michael should be worried about

In the hospital, it dawned on me that George’s wife seems to be tangled up with Cafferty now. It’s clear she doesn’t have an ounce of loyalty or concern for her husband, and I’m relieved to say that I never truly desired her in the first place.

At the hospital, Cafferty cautions Rebus that it’s not him who Michael should be concerned about. The individual Michael had killed earlier in the season was affiliated with the UDA. Cafferty proposes assistance, but under certain conditions, which Rebus declines. Instead, he chooses to inform his brother of the situation.

It’s clear that Michael is in hiding, as he recently contacted Chrissie and the boys to express his love. Chrissie successfully persuaded Michael not to surrender to the police, which may be beneficial at this time. If Michael remains elusive, there’s a possibility he could stay alive. However, Rebus is trying to locate Michael’s whereabouts so he can relay the message that the UDA is after him.

Lockie transfers the money into a trust

True to his word, Lockie arranges for Sammy to receive funds for future use. However, it’s evident that this money transaction might be a disguise for money laundering, but Rhona remains unaware of this fact. Despite his knowledge of Cafferty’s affairs, Lockie chooses not to share any details about his work with Rhona.

Later on, Lockie’s actions lead to consequences as he is ambushed and shot at his residence. This occurrence follows closely after Lockie had threatened Christie, suggesting it might be connected. Notably, the assailant wore a disguise.

In the finale, I found myself extending an offer for Rhona and Sammy to stay with me. Deep down, I yearned for my family’s presence again, but I couldn’t help but feel that things shouldn’t have unfolded in such a way. At that moment, I hadn’t yet grasped Lockie’s true colors, as the season drew to a close. The ending leaves us hanging, making it crystal clear that another season is essential if we are to delve deeper into this captivating storyline.

In most TV series, the main storyline tends to be resolved by the end of the first season, paving the way for the next. However, in this case, we’re left with more questions than answers. The only insights we have revolve around Rebus’s personal life. Questions such as who killed Lockie, where Michael might be, and whether Rebus will face disciplinary action for his role in the Cafferty situation remain unanswered, leaving us hanging for more.

Rebus is available to stream on Viaplay.
