There is a new legal dispute over the “James Bond” name.
Businessman Josef Kleindienst from Austria has taken legal action against Danjaq LLC, an American company that holds the trademark rights to the James Bond name. Kleindienst contends that Danjaq is not adequately using the trademark and desires to utilize it for his real estate ventures. His ambitious project involves constructing a $6 billion complex on six artificial islands in Dubai, known as the Heart of Europe.
Under EU law, if a trademark isn’t commercially used for at least five years, someone can challenge its ownership. As of now, the title for the next James Bond movie hasn’t been announced and no new actor has been chosen to play Bond, who is co-owned by film companies Eon and MGM Studios, with the latter being acquired by Amazon in 2022.
Admit it, a fellow constructing a fortress on an artificial island with the intention of breeding carpet sharks definitely gives off a strong Bond villain vibe.
It’s quite Bond-villainy to build a place and raise carpet sharks on an artificially made island, isn’t it?
