As a long-time admirer of Brad Bird’s extraordinary talent in the realm of animation, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation that borders on exhilaration! The news of Ray Gunn‘s release date window has me buzzing like a giant metal machine (a la The Iron Giant)!
The planned release date window for the much-awaited animated sci-fi film by Brad Bird, titled “Ray Gunn”, has been established, prior to him working on The Incredibles 3.
The person who directed and wrote the earlier Incredibles films will also contribute to the upcoming third movie, though it appears that he has a different animated production planned beforehand.
For a considerable time, the concept of Ray Gunn has been circulating, even preceding Bird’s first directorial project, ‘The Iron Giant’. Now, as per The Wrap, it appears that Bird is currently engaged in the production of the science fiction film noir detective movie based on this idea.
Initially slated to be a conventional 2D film at Warner Bros, Ray Gunn found itself in a holding pattern due to several factors. However, with Skydance bringing together Pixar’s John Lasseter and Brad Bird, the movie has now moved to that studio and Netflix, targeting a 2026 release date.
Ray Gunn to be the latest animated outing for Brad Bird
In the story, it’s unclear if any plot adjustments have been made, but originally, it was depicted in a future setting where both aliens and humans lived together. The main character, a human private detective, takes up an assignment to look into the faithfulness of a famous pop star. It is confirmed that Bird has transitioned from 2D animation to computer-generated imagery (CG).
Although Bird has only created a limited number of films over the past 25 years, his success in animation is extraordinary. For instance, “The Iron Giant” from 1999, an adaptation of Ted Hughes’ novel, remains a cherished classic. This heartwarming story follows the friendship between a nine-year-old boy and a colossal metal creature. In the end, the giant demonstrates its humanity by selflessly protecting people from their fears and biases.
Five years on, Bird took charge of the blockbuster Pixar production, The Incredibles: A Superhero Story. This narrative follows a former superhero adjusting to ordinary life, who was enticed to return to action upon receiving an intriguing and lucrative job offer.
Fourteen years after the release of a sequel, Bird was involved in another enchanting production by Pixar – “Ratatouille”, which hit screens in 2007. This heartwarming tale revolves around an aspiring rat who embarks on an extraordinary journey to realize his dream of becoming a chef.
