Ram Gopal Varma says Mohanlal’s performance in Company had issues: ‘He wasn’t doing it the right way’

Ram Gopal Varma is without a doubt one of the most influential directors in the nation, boasting a career spanning 36 years. Throughout this time, he’s created numerous groundbreaking films such as Siva, Satya, Company, Sarkar, and many more, and has worked with artists like Mohanlal, Amitabh Bachchan, Manoj Bajpayee, among others.

Intriguingly, it’s been brought to light by fans that during a recent chat on the YouTube channel Milestone Makers Max, the renowned director shared his initial concerns about Mohanlal’s portrayal in the 2002 gangster movie, Company.

In a conversation with his YouTube channel, filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma shared that he was astonished by Mohanlal’s approach during the narration. Contrary to expectations of intricate questions about the character, the actor simply inquired about the number of days the director needed for the project.

In his subsequent comments, RGV pointed out that the initial response seemed underwhelming, but upon reflection, he acknowledged Mohanlal as an ‘intuitive’ performer. He explained that this kind of acting is actually more impressive than one who meticulously prepares for a role.

In his comments, the director of Sarkar admitted that at first, he wasn’t fully satisfied with Mohanlal’s portrayal of IPS Veerappalli Sreenivasan in the movie. He explained that he required multiple retakes from Mohanlal because he felt the actor wasn’t delivering as intended. However, upon reviewing around 7 takes, RGV discovered that the initial take was actually the most effective one.

As a devoted admirer, I’d like to share my understanding of a filmmaker’s perspective: Sometimes, directors arrive with a set idea about an actor’s performance – actions, lines, even delivery. However, it takes a director a few moments to shake off that preconceived mindset and truly recognize the unique talents an actor brings to the table. Ram Gopal Varma emphasized this point, stating his personal experience.

2002’s “Company” is a gripping gangster drama that stars Mohanlal and Ajay Devgn in the lead positions. This movie also includes Vivek Oberoi, Manisha Koirala, Antara Mali, Seema Biswas, among others, playing significant roles. Upon its release, it received both critical and financial success and is frequently ranked as one of the top Indian gangster films ever produced.

On the career front of Mohanlal, he’s actively engaged with his upcoming movie titled L2: Empuraan, directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran. This production boasts a talented group of actors such as Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, Saniya Iyappan, Saikumar, Suraj Venjaramoodu, and others in significant roles. The release date for this exciting project is set for March 27th of this year.

Beyond this, the actor will collaborate once more with veteran director Sathyan Anthikad on the film Hridayapoorvam, and with emerging director Tharun Moorthy on Thudarum. Moreover, it’s been announced that he is now working with Anoop Menon on a future project, and is also expected to work again with Jeethu Joseph for the third installment of the Drishyam series.
