As a long-time follower and admirer of Thalaivar Rajinikanth, I must say that his journey in the film industry is nothing short of extraordinary. From humble beginnings to becoming an iconic figure, he has captivated audiences worldwide with his unique charm, charisma, and unparalleled acting skills. However, even the mighty Thalaivar isn’t immune to the occasional misstep, and the debacle that was Lingaa is a testament to that fact.
The movie titled Lingaa, featuring Rajinikanth as the leading actor, premiered in 2014. KS Ravikumar was responsible for its direction. At the time, it was among the top-earning Tamil films of the year. Yet, despite this, it was labeled a commercial flop because of its substantial production expenses. In a recent episode of Chat With Chithra, the director disclosed that Rajinikanth’s rumored participation in the movie may have contributed to its poor performance at the box office.
KS Ravikumar expressed that Rajinikanth took control over the editing process, leaving insufficient time for CGI, significantly altered the second half of the movie, deleted a song starring Anushka, eliminated an unexpected twist in the climax, inserted the artificial balloon jumping scene, and ultimately disrupted the flow of LINGAA.
In the past, I’ve been open about the performance of the movie “Lingaa,” starring Rajinikanth, which I directed. During an interview back in 2016, I shared that this Tamil film earned approximately Rs 158 crores worldwide and was often considered the highest-grossing film of that year, with only Endhiran outperforming it prior. Achieving a collection of Rs. 158 crores at the box office isn’t an easy feat; to this day, “Lingaa” remains a hit in terms of its earnings.
For those unaware, Rajinikanth portrayed two characters in this film – Lingaa, the central character, and his grandson Raja Lingeswaran. The plot centers around Lingaa, who sets off on a personal exploration after discovering the societal impact of his grandfather’s actions.
Lingaa also featured Anushka Shetty and Sonakshi Sinha in prominent roles alongside Rajinikanth.
On the professional side, Thalaivar is getting ready for the debut of his upcoming movie titled Vettaiyan. This film features Amitabh Bachchan, Fahadh Faasil, Rana Daggubati, among other notable actors in key roles. Following this, he will make an appearance in Lokesh Kanagaraj’s much-awaited production Coolie, alongside Sathyaraj and Nagarjuna, among others.
Recently, Rajinikanth checked into Chennai’s Apollo Hospital for a planned operation performed by a group of skilled physicians. He is now back at home, having been released from the hospital following his treatment.
