‘Rajinikanth, Chiranjeevi and NTR became stars with Bollywood remakes’: RGV on South films’ glory

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma recently shared his thoughts on the enduring popularity of stars like Rajinikanth, Chiranjeevi, and Sr NTR. He emphasized that their current success can be attributed to the successful remakes of Bollywood films from earlier times.

In an interview with India TV, RGV stated that initially, all four South Indian film industries re-created roles played by Amitabh Bachchan from the 70s and 80s. Notable stars like Rajinikanth, Chiranjeevi, N T Ramarao, and Rajkumar rose to prominence by acting in these remade films.

During his discussion on films in the ’90s when Big B was absent from acting, a filmmaker shared an interesting tidbit: several music companies were actually making movies to boost their soundtrack sales.

In simpler terms, Director RGV ended his speech by drawing a parallel between the new generation of Bollywood directors in the ’90s. He pointed out that these filmmakers had a keen interest in, and an ability to understand, foreign movies because they were fluent in English.

In contrast, producers in South Indian cinema during the 1990s were less inclined towards global cinema and primarily concentrated on producing movies that catered to a broader audience appeal.

Lately, RGV grabbed attention not just for films but also due to a podcast chat with Anurag Kashyap. In this discussion, they shared thoughts on the widespread application of VFX and hefty budgets in filmmaking.

Regarding Kashyap’s explanation, the director of Shiva made a comment by referring to his own film and stated, “I didn’t intentionally plan to make Satya on a shoestring budget. I spent what was necessary, which added authenticity and realism. If I had invested an additional Rs. 5 crores, the quality of Satya would have been reduced by five times.

Regarding the director’s professional endeavors, he recently completed working on a psychological thriller titled Saaree, which garnered negative feedback from both viewers and critics.

In addition, the director himself appeared in the film titled “Kalki 2898 AD,” acting alongside Prabhas. This movie, helmed by Nag Ashwin, was a grand science fiction production that drew inspiration from the ancient Indian epic, the Mahabharata.

In addition to Prabhas, the film featured key performances by actors such as Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, among others.

Besides Prabhas, the movie showcased major talents like Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, and more.

Another option: Apart from Prabhas, notable actors such as Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan, and Kamal Haasan were part of the film’s crucial roles.
