Ubisoft’s fresh, free-to-play version of Rainbow Six Siege (Rainbow Six Siege X) is now available, making it simpler for gamers to dive into this popular multiplayer game. However, with the shift towards being free-to-play, the game has already removed its costliest cosmetic item. Well, such is the trend in today’s video gaming world.
Rainbow Six Siege X’s grubby monetisation
As a gamer, I’ve been waiting (and waiting) for over ten years to dive into Rainbow Six Siege X without breaking the bank. Finally, the day has come! Ubisoft has made
In addition to transitioning to a free-to-play model, Ubisoft has launched a new tier of cosmetic items called Masterpieces. This lineup begins with the most costly item ever offered in the game – the Valkyrie Quintessence of Form skin priced at $50. As a result, the game’s revenue has significantly increased.
1) Purchasing these skins requires Rainbow Six Credits, a premium currency found within the game used for cosmetics and various other items. Conversely, Renown is another currency in the game where you can find free cosmetics and additional items. Unfortunately, Ubisoft has limited the rate at which players can earn Renown, even for those who have been playing the previous paid version extensively.
Previously, players received large quantities of Renown, sometimes doubled with the use of a booster. However, in Rainbow Six Siege X, the amount of Renown given in a single game has been decreased by up to 300%.
The level of acclaim in this game is determined by how effectively a player performs against top-tier opponents, who typically receive a substantial amount of currency for their exceptional skills. In the revised version of the game, one user reported earning only 108 Renown from a complete win in Dual Front, and that was with the game’s 30% booster activated.
108 Renown with 30% booster after a won full game of DF does not feel rewarding.

To give you a clear understanding, a significant motivation for gaining Renown is to access fresh Operators to control in the game. In Rainbow Six Siege X, an Operator typically costs 25,000 Renown and used to be achievable through regular play within approximately 80 matches without using boosters, assuming you were average at the game. Now, for those who excel at the game and utilize boosters, it takes a whopping 231 matches to unlock an Operator.
The current monetization strategy for Rainbow Six Siege by Ubisoft, as indicated by the “X” tag, seems to have negatively impacted the game compared to its previous version. Just like we’ve seen on Twitter, where X often symbolizes a downgrade, it appears that this is true in every aspect of the gameplay.
Considering the strong resistance from the game’s community, which has sustained it for a decade, we hope Ubisoft will revert Renown progression to its original pace. However, they have no intention of discontinuing the production of expensive cosmetics within the game. After all, this is the company that regularly incorporates battle passes into Assassin’s Creed titles. Guess it’s not always possible to please everyone.
