R Madhavan remembers a fond memory with Mani Ratnam ahead of Aaytha Ezhuthu’s shoot where he ‘offended’ the director

R. Madhavan and filmmaker Mani Ratnam have teamed up on numerous projects, with the director being instrumental in introducing Madhavan to Tamil films. With their history spanning years, Madhavan recently shared a heartwarming anecdote about an incident where he unintentionally upset the director.

Reflecting on a past discussion during a chat prior to filming Aaytha Ezhuthu, I was humbled by the director’s intention to have me play the character of Arjun Balakrishnan. This memory from India TV has left a lasting impression on me.

The actor explained, “I listened to the tale, expressed my desire to portray Inba, and when asked about my decision, I honestly shared that I believed it was the most compelling character in the narrative, with other roles potentially fading into obscurity. This comment seemed to upset him.

Moving forward in the discussion, Maddy requested more time from the director to showcase his ability to portray Inba. The actor then stated, “I’ve gone to great lengths – shaving my hair off, playing golf without sunscreen to achieve a deep tan, and I’m now almost unrecognizable. Dressed in this new appearance, I visited his office, only to be stopped by the security because they didn’t recognize me.

To elaborate, it turned out that the director didn’t recognize the actor until he burst into laughter with glee. The reason for this was that the actor had chosen to step away from roles typically associated with “lover boys,” and instead sought a challenge like playing Inba. However, it should be noted that the part of Arjun Balakrishnan eventually went to Siddharth.

The film “Aaytha Ezhuthu” is a political drama inspired by the life story of George Reddy, a notable scholar from Osmania University in Hyderabad. In this movie, Suriya, R. Madhavan, and Siddharth play the main characters. Supporting actors such as Esha Deol, Meera Jasmine, Trisha Krishnan, among others, also appear. Simultaneously, it was filmed in Hindi under the title “Yuva”.

Regarding R. Madhavan’s upcoming roles, you can expect him to take center stage in the movie titled “Test.” Co-starring Siddharth and Nayanthara, this film is set for a direct release on Netflix starting April 4, 2025.

Additionally, you might find it interesting to know that the actor will star as a lead character in the film “Kesari Chapter 2,” sharing the screen with Akshay Kumar and Ananya Panday.
